After such a long wait since Are you human too, I was so happy that there is finally a nice fantasy kdrama to enjoy haha. Finished this drama on the week that the last episode was screened.
Liked the fantasy a lot! Ahn can read people’s memories whenever he has skin contact with them and later on he is better at reading memories of the previous user when touching objects as well. The memories are those that evoke a lot of feelings. Liked how the fantasy not only makes the drama more interesting and helps in plot development, but also increases the intensity of emotions in some scenes. For example, the happy feeling Ahn feels when he repeatedly touches the hospital curtains he mischievously wrapped Jae In in, the sad feeling when he touches the soft toy dog his parents who passed away gave him, pain when he realises Jae In’s father is the murderer that caused the death of his parents and goes into a street filled with people with memories that portray atrocious deeds. It is interesting that Jae In can use Ahn’s ability to convey messages to him. While the ability to read people’s memories is a torture to Ahn, it later on helps him in many ways like exposing lies and saving people. Looks like an ability is a double edge sword?
Liked how Ahn likes to and is good at jumping from high places with a perfect landing like from rooftops or over the school gate. It is cool when he does so haha. It is also cool how he is so good at fighting. Park Jin Young acted well for the character. Was impressed by his acting in the scene in the first episode where the teacher was talking to him about expulsion and he switched so quickly from fooling around and joking to sad to joking to sad. Could feel that his happy-go-lucky nature and foolishness on the surface are used to cover his inner sadness at times. It is funny how he is poor at language and people around him have to correct him or explain to him and sometimes they just dont bother to explain and choose to ignore (if i didnt remember wrongly). My sister who likes GOT7 feels that Park Jin Young is cute when he acts unlike his another image as a kpop idol. Liked how Jae In is good at everything, including fighting.
Liked how the high school setting for the first few episodes sets a solid background and impression of the 4 characters. Liked the friendship between Ahn and Dae Bong and the background story between them. Dae Bong seems foolish but is actually smarter than Ahn haha. It is funny how Dae Bong only cares about the girl he likes and makes a big deal out of it when talking to Ahn. It is lucky how Dae Bong and Ahn dont need to look for jobs haha. Dae Bong has a super rich father and he can work at any gas/petrol station his father owns. Ahn has a prosecutor adoptive brother that supports him haha. Felt that Dae Bong’s relationship with So Hyun adds tidbit to the drama haha. It feels lighter than the other romantic relationships in the drama. It was fun to watch how “simple-minded” Dae Bong gradually breaks the ice of So Hyun who has a lot of pride.
Liked how Park Jin Young and Shin Ye Eun each portrayed their characters’ emotional struggles well. Felt sad for Jae In who has to suffer as her father is known to be the murderer, especially since her father is actually not the murderer. Enjoyed watching Ahn’s growth as he becomes more mature, and better at using his ability and dealing with issues. Liked the development of relationship and chemistry between Ahn and Jae In. It was fun watching their interactions as partners in crime or partners in solving cases, tutee and tutor, and lovers later. It is funny how Jae In mistakes him as a pervert at the start but shockingly asks him to shake her hand or do more to read her when she knows of his ability. Felt that the sweetness in their relationship is mostly due to Ahn haha, for example when he says that he will read and face her past with her, and take all her bad memories and only give her good memories. It is probably because Jae In is the more independent type of person and is more emotionally distanced due to her past unlike Ahn who still has a layer of naivety in him. It is funny how Ahn’s ability affects their relationship, for example how Ahn tries his best to avoid touching her and Jae In closing her eyes while bathing once in case Ahn reads it.
Liked the portrayal of relationship between Ahn and Sung Mo before the plot twist. Sung Mo saved Ahn when they were young as seen at the start of the drama. Was touched at the scene where Sung Mo comes back to the orphanage to pick Ahn up after both of them have grown up and asks if Ahn has waited for a long time. The dog is cute haha. Ahn picks up the dog at the same time Sung Mo returns and it nicely shows how both were abandoned but picked up. Liked the designs of their rooms after they moved house. It nicely shows the personalities of Ahn and Sung Mo. My sister praised the designs of the rooms and it was funny how we later found out that Ahn was the one who chose that “creepy” picture for Sung Mo’s room haha. Liked their interactions as Sung Mo challenges Ahn to read him and how Sung Mo acts as Ahn’s guardian, looking out for him, guiding him and helping him improve. And how Ahn thinks that he can help Sung Mo with his troubles. It is funny how Ji Soo and her friend attempt to rely on Ahn’s ability when they reach dead ends in the investigation (and it didnt turn out well at the start), much to Sung Mo’s disapproval at the start.
Writing on behalf of my sister for this paragraph. My sister who hardly gives recommendation rating of 10/10 for a drama gives this drama 10/10 as she feels that this drama evokes many feelings in her and she especially likes the character, Sung Mo, which is complex and well-portrayed. From the start of the drama, my sister can feel that he is someone who is not optimum in understanding or feeling emotions (he seems to be able to feel emotions but also seems to be not able to do that at the same time) and she liked Kim Kwon’s acting for portraying it well from the start. My sister already expected the plot twist about Sung Mo. There are people who dont like the plot twist and want a happy ending for all but it is good how the plot develops in this manner which portrays the harsh truth, pain, and darkness in this world well (I think so too). For people who think that Sung Mo is creepy, dont forget who is the creepy one. It is Sung Mo’s father who doesnt feel remorse to the end. It is not only killing people that is unforgiveable. In desperate situations, people dont even know what they would do and they may already have caused irreversible harm to others in the past without knowing it (I think so too).
For me, I dont quite understand why Ahn and Ji Soo feel sad about Sung Mo’s past (as a child). It is only possible to feel that sad for someone if you can relate to that person’s sadness and pain based on your own past experiences or you can jump into his/her shoes which I dont think is possible for me, Ahn or Ji Soo for this scenario. I wont be able to empathise with Sung Mo. The most I can do is probably just accept him and his past which is a pity how Ahn could not. You cant change the past already but if the relationship is strong enough, there is no reason not to accept him as his friend or family even after knowing what he did. Probably the relationship between Ahn and Sung Mo isnt strong enough? There are too many “accomplices” in the Yeongseong Apartment case so they cant totally blame Sung Mo for the effect of the whole incident.
Liked the interactions and development of relationship between Ji Soo and Sung Mo. I can subtly feel that Sung Mo likes Ji Soo even though it is ambiguous at times and misleading when he smiles when thinking about Jae In. Didnt like the character Sung Mo as much as my sister, felt quite neutral about him. Probably didnt like Kim Da Som’s character, Ji Soo, as much as other people as I happened to watch her as the villain in Band of Sisters/Unni is alive before this drama and the impact of that was quite great. Liked how Ji Soo is persistent not only when working on unsolvable police cases, but also when testing Sung Mo’s feelings, and urging Sung Mo to trust her and lean on her if he needs it. It was fun to watch Ji Soo feeling extremely delighted when Sung Mo indirectly says that she is someone he cherishes and when he tries to protect her by telling her not to dig deeper for the cases haha. Touched by how much Ji Soo is willing to give Sung Mo, how she patiently waits for Sung Mo despite him not being able to reciprocate her love, and later on how she urges him to stop and turn back when she is on the verge of death.
Sry for the spoiler here. Ji Soo’s death was sad. And surprisingly, I felt the saddest when it is the flashback of Ji Soo’s friend, the forensic scientist, even though it is the shortest. Park Jin Young’s crying scene could have been better, not sure if it is due to the angle he was being filmed from? It is too bad that Ji Soo’s father only steps up after her death. He chose to protect what is important to him but loses what is precious and irreplaceble. There was actually no turning back for Sung Mo by then but it was sad that Ji Soo’s death increases the intensity of his misery and pain. Looks like Sung Mo’s life is just about losing more and more things… Not sure why but when I am writing this review I feel sadder than when I was watching the drama haha…Maybe I am starting to understand the underlying layer of this part of the drama as I write about it? Or is it due to my sister’s explanation haha?
Felt that everything fits nicely in this drama and there is nice closure for the characters. The background music is quite impactful, especially the creepy instrumental one that gives me chill whenever I hear it. I cant remember if I chased this drama or not haha. The pace was a little slow at the middle but the overall pace is quite good. The drama is creepy and morbid at times and I usually drop crime-related dramas but the fantasy is good enough for me to continue watching it. Liked how the drama starts each episode revealing some parts of the past of Ahn, Sung Mo, and Jae In. Felt that it is a more creative way and also a better way than just flashbacks as it adds more substance to the plot. Special mentions to (writing the characters instead) Jae In’s senior, a police officer who is disgusting but interesting, Jae In’s aunt who stays by her side and has her own sad story, Jae In’s father, and Ji Soo’s subordinate who adds humour to the drama. I guess it is a breakthrough for Lee Seung Joon as I usually see him as nice characters and he reminds me of a secretary role.
