Long Series Kdrama Review The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop

The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop (2016) 月桂的紳士西裝店

Episodes: 54

starring Lee Dong Gun as Lee Dong Jin, Jo Yoon Hee as Na Yun Shil, Shin Goo as Lee Man Sool, Cha In Pyo as Bae Sam Do, Choi Won Young as Sung Tae Pyung, Hyun Woo as Kang Tae Yang, Oh Hyun Kyung as Lee Dong Sook, Lee Se Young as Min Hyo Won

Doing this based on memory.

I remember the interaction between Dong Jin and Yun Shil as funny. At the start, Yun Shil mistakes him as someone else which causes misunderstandings. I still remember one time Dong Jin happens to chance upon her at her mother-in-law’s farm and he slips and falls and spoils some fruits. They are quite sweet and awkward later on haha. Yun Shil’s husband or husband-to-be is a gangster that was arrested during the wedding if I am not wrong. Yun Shil’s husband-to-be helped her pay off her debt which is a big sum of money so she is grateful and marries him to repay him. He later threatens to harm them if she gets together with Dong Jin. Dong Jin’s mother is also against them being together since she feels that Dong Jin deserves more and his ex-wife is quite rich. She is also worried for Dong Jin’s safety. I feel that his ex-wife is quite foolish to divorce him because he resigns from the big company haha.

It is funny how the couple who runs the fried chicken business always suspects each other is cheating on him/her. The husband is often looked at for his good looks and muscles which leads to the wife often arguing and fighting with female customers. While it seems like the husband is what most woman wants, he is actually being cheated easily and is in debt for being a guarantor for his friend. They often take turns to suspect each other is going out with someone.

There is also another couple. Dong Sook opens a small comic cafe and is a fan of a once famous singer. At first, the top star looks down on her but ends up liking her later. Although once famous for singing rock, he is now earning a living singing other songs such as slow songs, folk music, and singing in front of shops to attract customers. If I didnt remember wrongly, Dong Sook even sells her cafe to help him produce a new music album but he ends up getting cheated. My mother feels that he should just give up on singing rock and earn money through other means but I dont think so. He can earn money using other means but should not give up on what he wants to do at the same time.

There is another young couple, Tae Yang and Hyo Won. The actor that acts as Tae Yang looks good-looking at first sight but not so after some time haha. Tae Yang is Yun Shil’s good friend. He is poor and likes someone but his love was unrequited and the person doesnt reject him until some time later. Then, he meets Hyo Won who is bubbly and cheerful and likes him first. If I didnt remember wrongly, she buys him meals just to stare at him haha. They are quite cute together. It is funny how he promises Hyo Won’s mum that he wont like Hyo Won. It is interesting to watch how Hyo Won’s mum accepts him even though she doesnt want to later on. He somehow meets the needs of Hyo Won’s mum haha. Liked how Tae Yang and Yun Shil support each other emotionally.

Long Series Kdrama Review Heaven’s promise

Doing this by memory since I watched this some time ago. Hope the details are correct.

Heaven’s promise (2016) 天上的約定

Episodes: 102

starring Lee Yoo Ri as Lee Na Yeon / Baek Do Hee, Suh Joon Young as Kang Tae Joon, Park Ha Na as Jang Se Jin, Song Jong Ho as Park Hwi Kyung

It is a revenge story. Na Yeon happily lives with her lover, Tae Joon, in a small apartment. However, things change after he gets a chance to go abroad to study (?) to improve his qualification. After he goes, he ends up dating Se Jin, the daughter of a rich family whose company he will be working for. Se Jin ends up becoming pregnant and Tae Joon chooses Se Jin over Na Yeon without knowing that Na Yeon has given birth to his child while he was away. While fighting with Se Jin’s family over various issues, Na Yeon ends up losing everything and is thrown into a mental hospital. Do Hee who looks exactly like Na Yeon is actually her identical twin that is raised by a rich family as the mother wanted to cover something up. She is a very smart reporter (?) and is good at uncovering things. She likes Hwi Kyung, Se Jin’s young uncle, but their relationship (if i didnt remember wrongly) is quite bumpy even though there is mutual attraction. Do Hee ends up knowing about Na Yeon and wants to save her from the mental hospital but there is a fire and their identity switches as they were wearing each other’s clothes. Do Hee passes away from the fire. Na Yeon becomes Do Hee and plans her revenge as her daughter also passes away in the fight.

Liked Suh Joon Young in To the beautiful you. But when in other dramas that I watched, Suh Joon Young seems to be acting as grey area characters that wont make people feel that he is either good or bad. He is quite indecisive in this drama. Liked Lee Yoo Ri’s acting in this drama. And she seems to be more memorable as evil characters haha. The story of them as children sets a solid background of the 4 main characters. Felt that young Na Yeon is pitiful. After she loses her mother, she ends up in a greater suffering caused by Se Jin and her mother after Se Jin’s father brings her home. Se Jin’s father doesnt know that Na Yeon is his daughter and just takes her in as his ex-lover’s child. Luckily, Na Yeon manages to meet a good family who cares for her but too bad her happiness is destroyed by Se Jin, Se Jin’s family and Tae Joon. It is funny that Se Jin’s mother tries to kill Na Yeon towards the end but doesnt know her daughter is in the car too, ending up harming her own daughter. She even has to beg Na Yeon for organ transplant (am I remembering from the correct drama?).

Liked the acting of the actress that acts as Hwi Kyung’s mother. She is very young, around the age of Se Jin’s mother, but marries Se Jin’s father’s father so she becomes higher in rank than Se Jin’s mother. She is a threat to Se Jin’s mother as she was Se Jin’s mother and Na Yeon’s mother’s good friend and knows their past. Liked how she is elegant. If I didnt remember wrongly, she doesnt expose Se Jin’s mother. After her husband dies, Se Jin’s mother bothers her and tries to snatch what she has. Later on, Hwi Kyung’s mother has dementia and sometimes talk about the past, scaring Se Jin’s mother haha. Liked the relationship between Hwi Kyung and his mother. I feel that Hwi Kyung, his mother and his father make a good happy family unlike the other more messed up families haha.

Long Series Kdrama Review All about My Mum

All about my Mum (2015) 拜託了,媽媽

starring Eugene Kim as Lee Jin Ae, Lee Sang Woo as Kang Hoon Jae, Go Doo Shim as Im San Ok (Jin Ae’s mother), Kim Kap Soo as Lee Dong Chul (Jin Ae’s father), Oh Min Suk as Lee Hyung Kyu (Jin Ae’s older brother), Choi Tae Joon as Lee Hyung Soon (Jin Ae’s younger brother), Kim Mi Sook as Hwang Young Sun (Hoon Jae’s Mother), Jo Bo Ah as Jang Chae Ri, Son Yeo Eun as Sun Hye Joo

Slot in to watch this drama when my parents were watching it on Channel U. This drama started out interestingly about a family with three children who have distinct characteristics. The eldest son Hyung Kyu’s first appearance is hilarious, singing in the car in a funny manner. He is an arrogant lawyer and does not like his family background. The second child is a daughter, Jin Ae. She is independent and a career woman who hopes to earn enough money to move out of the house she calls hell. She is hardworking and manages to do well in her career with her quick-wittedness, even though she gave up studying in university for her elder brother (?). The youngest son is quite good-looking which my sister thinks so too haha. He is kind and good-natured but seen as useless as he is unable to earn a living (can’t remember why but he keeps switching jobs).

The mother dotes on the eldest son and is bias towards him, not giving as much attention to her other two children. For a moment, I thought that it is because Hyung Kyu is the adopted son haha as I saw in one drama where they treat the adopted son better than their real children. The father is a troublemaker who cannot find a stable job, and is always cheated by his friends to invest in weird things and lose money. What I like about the father is how he provides emotional support to his other 2 children despite how he often creates trouble for the family. Throughout the drama, I felt the mother could have treated the children more equally, at least in front of them, to prevent misunderstandings and hurting them unnecessarily.

The relationship between Jin Ae and Hoon Jae started out well. Liked their interaction and how Hoon Jae is sure about his love for Jin Ae and “aggressively” makes Jin Ae think twice about being single and follow her heart. However, I disliked how he lies and hides his family background and their relationship for so long that it complicates their relationship and causes poor relationship between his mother and her. If he wants to hide those things, he should have explained properly to his mother and Jin Ae to prevent both of them from being hurt when they find out. It is nice how he is good at repairing and making things which he did a lot in Jin Ae’s family’s house. It is funny how Jin Ae’ s mother calls him Nimble Lad and Jin Ae’s friend/senior calls him “Stuck out butt” haha… Liked how Hoon Jae builds relationships with Jin Ae’s family members one by one when he unexpectedly stays at their house. But too bad, the biggest obstacle is actually his own mother.

It was fun to watch the interaction between Chae Ri and Hyung Soon as their relationship develops. Hyung Soon pretends to be his rich doctor friend to help his friend go for a blind date which leads to trouble as he falls in love with a rich man’s daughter haha. Due to having outstanding siblings and he compares himself to them, he feels inferior and has low confidence of his ability. Because of that, it adds instability to the relationship between him and Chae Ri, and it was quite a drag when he chooses to let go of Chae Ri a few times. However, their interaction is sweet, especially at the start, and adds a light and cheery atmosphere to the drama with their immaturity.

Enjoyed the development of relationship between Hyung Kyu and Hye Joo for the first half of the drama as Hye Joo is able to make Hyung Kyu smile and do things he usually do not do such as acting kind haha. Also liked Hyung Kyu’s interaction with Hye Joo’s child at the start. However, as the drama goes, when Hye Joo becomes what Hyung Kyu only cares about and Hyung Kyu is unable to handle matters sensitively, I felt the relationship didn’t change Hyung Kyu much after all. Also didn’t like it when Hye Joo orders Chae Ri to do things when Chae Ri has to work earlier in the day and she herself does not have to.

It was sad when the three children’s mother found that she has a rare cancer and tries to keep it from her children and her husband. When Hyung Kyu knows, he feels so guilty that he couldn’t talk for a period of time. As he tries to marry a single mum despite opposition and argues with his mother about how her expectation is a burden to him, he caused harm to his mother. Felt that he could have been more grateful and nicer to his siblings throughout the drama. I felt especially sad when Jin Ae knows about it, and Jin Ae and her mother cried together. If her mother had given more love to Jin Ae, Jin Ae wouldn’t have held so much resentment, followed by her grief for the upcoming loss. When Dong Chul finds out, he starts helping out with more housework chores and tries to hide his emotions but to no avail haha. Although he may be a good father, I felt that he is not a good husband until towards the end, giving lots of suffering to his wife despite his ability to sweet-talk. Liked how the drama ended with so much bliss despite the sadness before.

Long Series Kdrama Review Cheongdamdong Scandal

Doing this review by memory.

Cheongdamdong Scandal (2014) 清潭洞丑闻

starring Choi Jung Yoon as Eun Hyun Soo, Kang Sung Min as Bok Soo Ho, Lee Joong Moon as Jang Seo Joon, Seo Eun Chae as Nam Joo Na, Im Sung Uhn as Lee Jae Ni, Kim Jung Woon as Bok Kyung Ho

As the couple Hyun Soo and Soo Ho started out as a loving couple, I expected that they will break up at the end of this long series drama which happens sadly. At first, I didnt quite want them to separate as Soo Ho manages to stay firm against his domineering mother to marry Hyun Soo and their marriage life is romantic but as he slowly loses the trust of Hyun Soo by lying to her later on, I guess the couple cannot last any longer. Too bad because the actor who acted as Soo Ho is quite good-looking haha… While Soo Ho’s mother seems to accept Hyun Soo and treat her like her own daughter, she is actually waiting for their divorce and giving her contraceptive pills disguised as nutrient pills to prevent them from having children. Because Hyun Soo’s mother is a single mother and was a maid (if I am not wrong), her mother-in-law just cannot accept her. She worked very hard to raise her two sons and become rich and wants her sons to marry people who match their family status, especially her elder son, Soo Ho. But of course, she will get her own retribution later for the bad deeds she did.

Liked the couple Seo Joon and Hyun Soo and the development of their relationship as the drama goes. Found how they first meet each other quite funny. If I didnt remember wrongly, Hyun Soo was singing to some child through the phone in the lift (both of them were in) to calm the child down and Seo Joon keeps thinking about it after that and laughing about it. They actually met in the past when they were children. The difference between Seo Joon and Soo Ho that I noticed is that Soo Ho has to have Hyun Soo by his side but Seo Joon does not need to “own” her. Seo Joon has a phobia of water after his mother drowns to save him and Hyun Soo is better able to comfort him than Joo Na who only wants to force him to like her. Eventually, she is even able to help him forget about his phobia seen in an incident that he jumps in the swimming pool when she is bullied by Joo Na and she is pushed in or accidentally slipped into the pool. Also enjoyed the interaction between Hyun Soo and her best friend who may be slow at catching on but provides refuge when she needs it.

Another couple that is memorable is the Jae Ni+Kyung Ho couple. They were arranged to marry by Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother. Kyung Ho’s girlfriend and him were forced to be separated. Because of that, Kyung Ho holds resentment against his mother and is guilt-ridden towards his girlfriend. He makes friend with Hyun Soo and becomes close to her when they become in-laws. Hyun Soo makes him feel better when he feels suffocated in that house. He also admires Soo Ho for being able to go against their mother. Happy that he takes the advice of Hyun Soo and starts to make his arranged marriage filled with love. However, when that happens, sadly something bad happens to Kyung Ho (trying not to give spoiler) and I remembered being sad as it was quite a waste. I think after that, something happened to Jae Ni’s rich family and Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother abandons her and she seeks to take revenge.

Wow, seeing how I can remember so much about this drama even though I watched it quite some time ago, it shows that this drama is quite content rich and have many memorable scenes that captivated me haha or is it because I just happened to have more time at that time to sit in front of the tv and watch haha?

Random Long Series Korean Drama Reviews My daughter Geum Sa Wol&Still Loving You

Woah. Finally have a bit of time for blogging…, used much of my free time watching dramas and shows. And I am just procrastinating something now so making use of some procrastinating time to write hahaha.

I was glancing through long series drama My Daughter Geum Sa Wol as my mother was watching it on Channel U. This drama uses architecture as the theme. Typical of long series dramas, there is a hidden daughter and the mother treats her own daughter badly without knowing. And then there is the so-called lead couple that should not get together since the father of the guy ruined the family of the mother of the girl. Sa Wol, Oh Wol and Hye Sung were good friends at the orphanage until Hye Sung becomes blinded by greed and fear.

The more irritating villain that kind of angers me is actually not the evil man that caused lots of deaths but the insecure girl that causes misunderstandings, and tells lies wherever she goes just to get what she wants. If only she could be satisfied with what she has, her misery and others’ misery will be greatly reduced. But then the plot would not have been able to run and many truths may be left undiscovered… She must have had a hard time living in fear of being abandoned or exposed but that is just an excuse for her actions. Felt that Se Hoon is too good for the insecure evil Hye Sung haha. She is too lucky as an evil second lead, considering all the things she receives despite all the bad deeds she does.  (By the way, I didn’t put any pic of her haha)

Sa Wol-Chan Bin couple

Liked the characters in the drama such as Sa Wol, Chan Bin, Se Hoon, Oh Wol, Oh Wol’s father, Oh Wol’s children that are portrayed well.

Oh Wol’s father and his son, Se Hoon

I felt tears in my eyes when I was watching Oh Wol’s father shouting her daughter’s name at the site of the collapsed building meant for the orphanage children. As he was poor, he left his daughter at the orphanage and intends to pick her up once he earns enough money to be able to support both his children at the same time. Little does he know that the “good” building he wants her to stay in for 1 day actually collapses before he could fetch her home.

Child-like Oh Wol comforting Sa Wol

I especially liked how Song Ha-yoon expressed Oh Wol, especially when she becomes child-like after an accident indirectly caused by Hye Sung.

I feel sad for Hye Sung’s kind adoptive mother who is being kept in the dark about important things. She does not know that the child her husband so persistently wants to adopt is “his own” child.

I was surprised when I see Yoo Jae Suk In this drama haha…hahaha. Although the revenge plot in this drama is interesting, it isn’t a drama I would want to chase. I think I only watched about 1/2 here and there of the whole drama+last few episodes to save the agony.

I also happen to browse through Still Loving You which is quite cute&sweet haha. Was randomly browsing through YouTube and suddenly pressed into an episode…

The starting of the drama is hilarious when Soo Ho first started to learn cooking so that he can work for his rich father’s food company. Love the lead couple and their chemistry! The plot is kind of cliché but I like how the lead couple’s love thrives throughout the drama. They actually married quite early in a long drama and their married life is just too perfect haha. Like how Soo Ho stands up for Eun Soo and trusts her all the time. I was expecting some conflicts but looks like there isn’t much after they got together or is it I was not patient enough to watch till there? After some time, the drama plot becomes quite dull so I didn’t manage to watch the whole thing episode by episode.

Liked how the characters grow and mature, especially the Soo-Hyun-Bitna couple haha.

Another interesting major conflict in this drama is how Soo Ho’s sister, a doctor, wants to marry a single father who is raising a pair of twins.

That’s all. Time to go back to my dull “long series drama” life…

Random recommendations for long series Korean Dramas

As a student and I do not have much time or patience to complete long series dramas, I do not watch all the episodes in the long series dramas but I still get the rough idea about what it is about. Recently, I have watched 2 long series dramas when my parents were watching and I found them quite good!

Giant (2010) 巨人

giant

starring Lee Bum Soo as Lee Kang Mo, Yeo Jin Goo as Kang Mo (teen), Park Jin Hee as Hwang Jung Yeon, Nam Ji Hyun as Jung Yeon (teen), Park Sang Min as Lee Sung Mo, Kim Soo Hyun as Sung Mo (teen), Joo Sang Wook as Jo Min Woo, Hwang Jung Eum as Lee Mi Joo, Park Ha Young as Mi Joo (child)

This drama tells the story of three siblings who grew up in the 1970’s. Lee Kang Mo, his older brother Sung Mo and younger sister Mi Joo were separated at a young age when their father was killed in a smuggling scheme and their mother also died subsequently. When they are able to reunite years later, they had all reached adulthood and are determined to exact revenge upon the people responsible for their misery.

It was very tragic when they separated, especially Kang Mo and Mi Joo. Really liked the character Kang Moo in this drama, from when he is young acted by Yeo Jin Goo to when he is an adult. He is very intelligent and mischievous. Because he has a brother he can rely on, he is not very hardworking and still can fool around without much serious consequence. Liked the plot development as Kang Mo later becomes his father’s best friend’s adoptive son after helping him solve a very serious problem and gradually sets his foundation in the construction industry. Disliked Jung Yeon’s stepbrother as he is good-for-nothing and greedy. Liked the development of the relationship between Jung Yeon and Kang Mo.

Was kind of surprised when I see Kim Soo Hyun in this drama but too bad his character is not the main character. I somehow predicted that his character will not be able to take revenge even though he knows who are their enemies and eventually dies (sry for the spoiler). It is funny that both Kang Mo and Mi Joo likes the (so called) enemies’ children. Jung Yeon’s father is partially to blame for the murder and he benefited from it. There is also a struggle when Kang Mo knows about what his adoptive father did. It is an enjoyable long series drama, especially when Kang Mo solves problems related to constructions and when he uses clever ways to do business.

Jang Bo Ri is here (2014) 张宝利来了!

Come-Jang-Bo-Ri-Poster

starring Oh Yeon Seo as Jang Bo Ri, Yoo Eun Mi as Jang Bo Ri (child), Kim Ji Hoon as Lee Jae Hwa, Jung Yoon Suk as Lee Jae Hwa (child), Oh Chang Suk as Lee Jae Hee, Jo Hyun Do as Lee Jae Hee (child), Lee Yoo Ri as Yun Min Jung, Shin Soo Yun as Yun Min Jung (child)

This drama is about two families, two women, two mothers who have to deal with very unexpected surprise when their daughters’ identities changed overnight. Jang Bo Ri (Oh Yeon Seo) who grew up with her poor family suddenly becomes wealthy overnight after she discovers that she’s a daughter of a wealthy family. In contrary, Yun Min Jung (Lee Yoo Ri) suddenly has to adapt herself from living in luxury to her poor family.

Started to watch this drama as it is in Singapore’s channel u and my sister who likes Jung Yoon Suk since Good Doctor was drawn into watching it. After that, my whole family starts to become glued to it after my sister watches it online using smart television. It is a good long series drama and it does not drag a lot. Lee Yoo Ri really can act well as the bad guy haha. Liked the relationship between Jae Hwa and Bo Ri. Jae Hwa is even willing to accept Bo Ri’s adopted child as his own. Liked Jae Hwa and Bo Ri’s personality a lot. Towards the end, as Bo Ri has to deal with cunning Min Jung, she becomes more steel-hearted. Looks like we cannot be too kind when handling the bad guys. If not, we are bound to be bullied and pushed around. I also enjoyed the process of  Min Jung’s boyfriend taking revenge and his relationship with his daughter adopted by Bo Ri.

Long series Korean Drama Review Wang’s family

King’s family / Wang’s family (2013) 王氏家族

Enjoyment: 8/10

wang family

The Wang family faces a number of challenges: elitism; discrimination; children moving back home after living on their own during colleges; the power dynamics between husband, wife and family; and decisions about when to marry and have a baby given the financial difficulties in today’s Korean society. The first daughter had married into a well-off family, but after they went bankrupt she and the family had to move back to her parents’ home. The second daughter is also having financial difficulties as her husband is jobless, while the third daughter suddenly decided to quit her job. How will the family manage to survive such obstacles?

Did not expect it to be that engaging even though I do not watch every episode. I like the second daughter’s part of the drama the most and I support the couple the most. Her husband makes the most significant change, from poor to rich to even poorer. Although he has a lawyer degree, he does not put it to good use and the family income is mostly from his wife. They finally managed to buy a house due to his wife’s effort. Although her husband is always looked down by her family, he always stands up for his wife. They are still a loving couple (with cute children) until her husband finally gets a job and he has an extra-marital affair, blinded by money. Finally, he gets chased out and becomes a beggar after being discovered for stealing things from the rich lady’s house to save his wife. In the end, he becomes a househusband and it is his turn to look out in case his wife has an extra-marital affair. I loved the romance between the couple the most. I admire the second daughter. She is able to achieve many things from scratch with her own hard work. I really dislike how their mother treats the second daughter. She does the most to help their family anytime but their mother only treats her badly, even causing her miscarriage of her 3rd child.

I also liked the third daughter part. Although the pace is a bit slow in the development of their relationship, I enjoyed the competitions she participated in which is set up by her father-in-law who hates her. Her lover is the most good looking in this drama to me. Haha. However, he does not really make a good husband in my opinion, especially at the start. He seems to be unable to help the third daughter with her relationship with his father and fails to realise his birth mother’s ulterior motive.

I think the most pitiful character is the first daughter’s husband. When his company goes bankrupt, he has to stand up on his own feet alone. His mother-in-law looks down on him thereafter even though she once enjoyed his wealth. The first daughter does nothing to help and even says that she regrets marrying him and giving birth to their children. She cannot stand doing any work or living in a small apartment. As a mother and wife, she does not know how to take care of the children or cook a meal for his husband. When he worked till late at night as a delivery man, he starves and has to act as a cat when “stealing” things from his mother-in-law’s kitchen to avoid being discovered. However, towards the end of the drama, he ends up with 2 women and is unable to handle things well much to my disappointment. He treats his own children better than the stepchild (who is actually also his real child), showing his bias.

It is interesting that almost every family member of the family has a phrase they repeat very often. The first daughter always says that she participated in a beauty contest in the past as if it makes a big deal. The second daughter’s husband always exclaims that he is about to go crazy. No matter what the situation is, he is able to bring up that phrase effectively much to my amusement. The old grandmother in the family says from time to time that “it is nothing as compared to war” or she should die early when things do not go her way. The last episode about the future is so ridiculously funny. Hahahaha.
