Angel Eyes (2014) 天使之眼
Genre: Melodrama, Romance, Family, Medical
Enjoyment: 8/10 Pace: 6/10 No. of times I watched it: 1
starring Lee Sang Yoon as as Park Dong Joo, Kang Ha Neul as Park Dong Joo (young) and Koo Hye Sun as Yoon Soo Wan, Nam Ji Hyun as Yoon Soo Wan (young). Other casts: Kim Ji Suk as Kang Ji Woon and Seung Ri as Teddy Seo.
Plot: Yoon Soo Wan (Koo Hye Sun) and Park Dong Joo (Lee Sang Yoon) were each other’s first loves, but were forced to separate due to painful family circumstances. Twelve years later, Soo Wan now works as an emergency rescue worker, while Dong Joo is a surgeon. They meet each other again. But Soo Wan is engaged to Neurosurgeon Kang Ji Woon (Kim Ji Suk). Knowing this in addition to his obligation to Soo Wan’s father who raised him, Park Dong Joo decided not to reveal his identity to Soo Wan and go back to United States. Will Soo Wan realize that Doctor Dylan Park is her first love, Park Dong Joo? Will they end up together despite all the obstacles that they are going to face?
Zoom into characters: Dong Joo is an excellent student whose grades are eligible to become a doctor but his dream is to be a firefighter like his father. He falls in love with Soo Wan at 1st sight and secretly watches her from afar. His love changed from one-sided to two-sided after he found out she is blind and they started to have interaction. Soo Wan loves to study constellation and becomes a lonely person after she lost her mother and her eyes. Her father, a doctor, cannot bear to see her as she not only reminds him of her mother, but it also makes him feel guilty for being unable to cure her. Her life changed after she becomes part of Dong Joo’s family.
There was a car accident in the tunnel which Soo Wan and her mother are involved. Dong Joo’s father tries to save Soo Wan’s mother but to no avail as the whole tunnel collapses. Both of them die and Soo Wan becomes blind. Feels sad that both have to die, especially Dong Joo’s father who can escape but choose to save Soo Wan’s mother. Such a remarkable firefighter spirit!
Love the development between young lead couple which creates a great impact to the start of the drama. Dong Joo even tests for himself what it is like to be blind when Soo Won was blind. After the couple separated, the interesting thing is both do the job of the other. Soo Wan’s father is a doctor and Dong Joo’s dream is to become a firefighter like his father. They meet as firefighter(Soo Wan) and doctor (Dong Joo). Seung Ri (as a new firefighter working under Soo Wan) adds humour to the heavy plot by using English words and his acting to make scenes funny.
I dislike it when Soo Wan’s father keeps separating the couple. He is just using the excuse that he does not want Soo Wan to know that the reason Soo Wan can see now is because she gets an eye transplant from Dong Joo’s mother who died. He probably is just guilty that he did not want to save Dong Joo’s mother so that Soo Wan can see. He even wants to make Dong Joo his son instead of son-in-law. Happiness can be simple. However, due to the many regrets and wrong decisions people made, happiness seems to be out of reach. At first, I did not like Ji Woon who is Dong Joo’s love rival but feel sorry for him as his mother killed someone for him to cover up his crime and at the same time help Soo Wan see without him knowing and makes him suffer after he knows about it. Can a mother’s love be harmful to the child?
Why you should watch: Liked how the drama starts and there are many touching moments but the pace is too slow for me after they finally found each other and focus more on the emotions and romance of the lead couple. They could have gotten together much earlier yet they keep pushing each other away or hurting each other. I would have found it more interesting if they focus on the job of firefighters. It is the lead couple’s acting that keeps me going in this drama.
