Review: Joo In Hyung’s  mother gave In Hyung four dolls when she was a little, which she named JB, Mark, Jackson and Youngjae. She liked JB the best among all the dolls. When her mother passed away, she shred tears of sadness on the dolls, which became his dream knights and came to live. One day, the four dream knights came to her house and wanted to sleep on her bed. She was shocked and tired to get them out of her house. One of the scenes was throwing a pail of water onto them. The four of them disappeared as knights cannot get in contact with water. So the dolls became wet too. Anyway, it should be around that part when she realised that they were the dolls.

Junior, Yugyeom and Bambam, which was once dream knights, were in a kpop group called Got and were students of the school. In Hyung is a fan of Jr. There was once when JB pushed In Hyung to Jr as he was upset In Hyung do not know who they are and it caused a scene. Many fans started disliking her. In Hyung wanted to join the dance competition as the winner will get to have a performance with Jr but she hurt her leg. The four knights try to teach and dance with her to make her the winner.

Jr realised that JB, Youngjae, Mark and Jackson may be knights and he asked Bambam and Yugyeom to test them, like if they have power or they will disappear in water. One funny part was when Yugyeom tried to get water on Youngjae but ended up spraying water on a lady. Haha.

After Jr knew they were knights, he told them that if In Hyung shred tears of happiness, they will be gone and if they want to live as humans, they had to betray their owner, which they did. However, JB did not want In Hyung to die as he love In Hyung and is willing to sacrifice himself.

Jr was not satisfied with the answer JB gave and tried doing many things like dating In Hyung to make him betray her but to no avail. But through this, In Hyung also knew that she likes JB as she went on a date and missed watching a concert with JB. So JB and In Hyung went on a date and the knights disappeared when she shred tears of happiness. And the ending is after some time or years(can’t remember), JB came back to find In Hyung.

My own review: I feel that Jr doing all this is only trying to prove himself correct that it was right to betray his owner. And I feel that this drama is quite sad because the four knights had to disappear and I feel that no matter who is gone, the party living will be sad. I would like to especially comment about a couple I ship, which is Jackson and Min. It is actually quite sad that he cannot go with Min because he had to sacrifice himself for In Hyung as well. This is one that I felt pity about as he cannot be with her.

Mirror of the Witch (2016) 魔女寶鑑

Genre: Fantasy, Historical, Romance, Dark magic

Enjoyment: 8/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

mirror of the witch

starring Yoon Shi Yoon as Heo Joon, Kim Sae Ron as Princess Seo Ri / Yun Hee, Yum Jung Ah as Shaman Hong Joo, Lee Sung Jae as Choi Hyun Seo, Kwak Shi Yang as Choi Poong Yeon,  Lee Yi Kyung as Yo Kwang, Min Do Hee as Soon Deuk

Plot: When Queen Shim (Jang Hee Jin) is unable to conceive, she visits the shaman Hong Joo (Yum Jung Ah). Hong Joo’s powerful black magic helps the Queen give birth to a twin boy and girl. However, the dark sorcery comes with a price: the twins are cursed but since Hong Joo can transfer the curse to one of them, Seo Ri is abandoned and ordered to be killed. Seo Ri is rescued by the father of Poong Yeon (Kwak Shi Yang) and Poong Yeon becomes her only friend as she grows up in hiding.

Zoom into characters:  Heo Joon is an illegitimate son of a noble and a slave. He is often bullied by his stepbrother because of his status. Heo Joon happens to chance upon Seo Ri’s house far in the woods and caught by Seo Ri as an intruder. They make friends thereafter. Seo Ri is unable to leave the hideout as the place protects her from activating the curse and Heo Joon keeps her company occasionally. On a festive day, Poong Yeon decides to defy his father’s wishes and let curious Seo Ri see the outside world for once. Her curse is thus activated and Hong Joo is able to locate her and send people to kill her. After a close escape from death, Seo Ri grows up as a witch with the help of Yo Kwang, all the while trying to figure out how to lift the evil curse on her. While saving Seo Ri, Heo Joon misses the departure time and his mother is killed by his stepbrother, leaving Heo Joon in grief and he plots revenge on his stepbrother.

Enjoyed Yoon Shi Yoon’s portrayal of Heo Joon! It has been some time since I see Yoon Shi Yoon’s acting and it is still good haha! He looks remarkably good in this drama as his character is not only smart, daring and determined but also with his unconditional love for Seo Ri. Liked how Heo Joon only sees Seo Ri as the inquisitive girl who he met in the deserted place no matter how much she changes or what she has become. Unlike Poong Yeon who only likes Seo Ri before her curse is activated, Heo Joon who sees her ghostly cursed self actually accepts her even though he is fearful of her horrifying appearance. Kim Sae Ron played her role very well too, gradually developing from her innocent self to a powerful person who can protect others and defend herself. Liked the chemistry between Seo Ri and Heo Joon, how they care for each other and support each other well.

As I like fantasy a lot, it was fun watching Heo Joon and Seo Ri making potions to fulfill people’s wishes. When people’s earnest wishes are granted, candles will be lit up and they will be closer to breaking the curse. There are many potions such as the intelligent potion that Heo Joon accidentally drank and it is so funny how the words are zooming into his head. Heo Joon also drank the potion for missing the dead and it is heartbreaking when he sees his mother for the last time. It was funny when Heo Joon ends up in Seo Ri’s hideout for the second time and caused such a mess, even burning her book of spell. Towards the end, it is moving and sad when Heo Joon and Seo Ri take it upon themselves to sacrifice for each other so that the other can survive.

Disliked the king who cannot do much and only think about guarding his position. Enjoyed the plot twist when Poong Yeon and his father take turn to be made use of by Hong Joo without them knowing, making it interesting to watch as the good people at times take the evil side, and cause more unexpected problems for Seo Ri. I liked Soon Deuk and Yo Kwang as individuals with a strong character rather than as a couple haha. Despite Soon Deuk being a female which is disadvantaged, she is able to survive well in such a time. Yo Kwang’s loyalty to Poong Yeon’s father is admirable. Despite Poong Yeon’s father turning evil, Yo Kwang still does not give up on him and try to make him come back to his senses.

There are many scenes in the dark which makes watching the drama a bit of a strain to the eye. My mother actually commented that the drama is scary and disturbing which may be a factor to consider when you decide if you want to watch. It was a nice closure for Hong Joo but the ending, especially for the lead couple is not acceptable to me. 😦

Why you should watch: Enjoyed the plot, the touching moments, the twists and the development of the characters, especially Heo Joon and Seo Ri.

Favourite MVs+ osts: Moon (Sadness) by Im Jung Hee
