Korean Drama Review RW

Yay! I finally finished my final few assignments and now left a few weeks before school ends for the term.

Reunited worlds (2017) 再次相遇的世界

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy, Family

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 2

starring Lee Yun Hee as Jung Jung Won, Jung Chae Yun as Jung Jung Won (young), Yeo Jin Goo as Sung Hye Sung, Ahn Jae Hyun as Cha Min Joon

Love this drama! Nowadays, it seems like it is the crime season. So many crime dramas which is not my cup of tea haha. I always prefer comedy, romance, fantasy. And maybe action sometimes. Sigh but just have to get hold of whatever nice drama I can.

Started watching this due to Yeo Jin Goo haha. Due to the misleading summary I saw of the drama about two childhood friends suddenly having great age difference and meeting each other, I thought it wont be good and didn’t have much expectations of it. At first, my sister didn’t want to watch it due to the summary but luckily I tried it and then persuaded her to watch haha. After half way through, we ended up watching faster than it is being screened.

This drama starts out very sad with Hae Sung’s death and his relationships with his friends and family. The atmosphere at the start of the drama effectively brings out the dark, foreboding, sad feeling. Even when he returns, I still can feel the sadness lingering as I know he will never return for good. This drama is similar to those spiritual dramas that even though they get to return and possess somebody’s body, we know they will have to leave one day after settling what they have to.

Yeo Jin Goo acted well as Hae Sung (as expected haha). Despite him being younger than most of the other actors and actresses, his portrayal of being their friends and elder brother is good! He also portrayed Hae Sung’s conflicted and mixed feelings well.

The relationship between Hae Sung and Jung Won is convincing and fun, and I was touched when Hae Sung tells Jung Won that his death is not her fault and not to “run away” anymore.

Loved Hae Sung’s interaction with each of his siblings that have distinct characteristics, both heartwarming, and heartbreaking towards the end. It is sad that the separated siblings are finally reunited due to Hae Sung but he cant stay. Liked the portrayal of each of his friends too. It was funny when the people first see him return, especially those who faint or keep running away from him thinking he is a ghost such as Hae Chul and Ho Bang. It is cool that Hae Sung has special abilities such as being able to see and hear things from far away, having excellent taste and being very strong which is quite useful for him to eavesdrop, pursue his passions and punish people who bullied his siblings (haha).

It is funny how Min Joon is unlucky like Jung Won (if I didn’t remember wrongly) or more unlucky than her, getting into serious accidents when with her. I expected Min Joon to end up with Jung Won as Hae Sung comes back to put everything back to its right position, including helping Jung Won forget him and move on. Perhaps they wanted to show how Hae Sung deserves to be remembered and cannot be replaced but I think if Hae Sung manages to match-make the two and still be remembered by Jung Won and kept in the corner of her heart, his sacrifice would be more filled with selfless love in addition to the sorrow.

Korean Drama Review Blood

Blood (2015) 血

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Medical, Action, Vampire

Enjoyment: 8/10 (due to the ending)  Pace: 9/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

blood

starring Ahn Jae Hyun as Park Ji Sang, Baek Seung Hwan as Ji Sang (young), Koo Hye Sun as Yoo Ri Ta, Ji Jin Hee as Lee Jae Wook, Jung Hae in as as Joo Hyun Woo and Son Soo Hyun as Min Ga Yun.

This drama makes it such that vampires are just infected people. Liked the drama at the start when he tries to hide his identity of being a vampire while working at the hospital. He seems like a person without feelings when showing his cold-hearted side. He bluntly tells the patient how long they can live and treats them with scientific reasoning without any care. While humans want to live forever by becoming vampires, Ji Sang on the other hand actually wants to become human.

It is fun to watch when Ri Ta gets closer and closer to finding out about him. Ri Ta even misunderstands him as having some psychological illness like panic attack when he drops the scalpel during surgery as his medicine was exchanged for a fake one. Besides that, she is worried for Ji Sang whom she thinks has a deadly illness when all his measurements such a blood pressure are abnormal. In addition, she thinks that she is crazy after seeing Ji Sang’s wound healing by itself. The scene filled with flowers where Ri Ta tries to make Ji Sang sweet-talk is extremely funny. Ji Sang’s bed really looks like a coffin. Haha. It was sweet when Ri Ta wears winter clothes in order to be with Ji Sang in that cold coffin-like bed.

Liked Hyun Woo a lot in this drama. He is Ji Sang’s friend, partner and caretaker. He is a brilliant researcher and discovers that there are indeed vampires in the world (which no one believes). Because of that, Ji Sang depends on him to find a cure for him to become human. He has a very cheerful personality and cares a lot for Ji Sang. Enjoyed how his robot Luuvy adds humour to the drama, especially when communicating with Hyun Woo. The robot even saves Hyun Woo’s life once.

There is a twist which shocked me and perhaps kept me going in this drama. Really surprised by how Ga Yun is actually a vampire helping the vampire chief. Son Soo Hyun acted very well as  the innocent-looking trainee and changed completely when it is known that she has an evil side when following orders and dealing with Ji Sang behind his back. Glad to see that the vampires also have feelings. Towards the end, they start to feel that what their leader is doing is wrong and oppose him. Disliked the ending a lot, especially when Hyun Woo is killed. It would have been better if Ji Sang’s team is able to find a cure to treat those people under the vampire chief’s research and if there is more conflict about Ji Sang being human or not+ Ri Ta’s possibility of getting the heredity deadly illness.

Quick Picture Recap YAAS

Ji Yong and Soo Sun who are from the same school are half-friend, half-enemy.

Pan Seok hopes that Ji Yong’s mother can be a witness in the case. He guarantees her safety.

Ji Yong’s mother risks her life to save Ji Yong.

Ji Yong holds a grudge against Pan Seok as he thinks that Pan Seok is in cahoots with Killer Boots and did not keep his promise to protect his mother. He changes his name to Dae Gu.

They report to work as rookie detectives with different but unbefitting motives.

The rookies eavesdrop on whether they can continue working and heard that Pan Seok decides to give them a chance.

Although Dae Gu is skeptical about finding the gum wrapper in the pile of rubbish, they end up finding it and bringing it back after a nasty fight.

They finally get a chance to work on a case in pairs. A woman that they promise to help catch his stalker is stabbed. Soo Sun and Dae Gu are overcome with guilt.

Dae Gu feels that Pan Seok has no right to criticise them and starts a fight before leaving.

Dae Gu returns after imaginary mother helps him sort out his thoughts but is bind to Soo Sun (because of Tae II).

Dae Gu, Ji Gook, Tae II,  Soo Sun are held hostage at a restaurant with some high school girls. Dae Gu and Soo Sun pretend they are a couple as they cannot hold their hands up to surrender (bind with handcuff) or their identity as police will be known.

The rookies finally solve a case successfully.

Pan Seok’s past reveals.

Dae Gu uses his photographic memory to help in the investigation.

Soo Sun and Dae Gu catching the bad guy by all means at the airport.

Dae Gu kisses Soo Sun to prevent his identity from getting discovered.

On another occasion, Dae Gu manages to catch a bad guy after choosing the bad guy over finding out about Boots.

Soo Sun comforts Dae Gu after finding out his real identity.

Dae Gu’s sponsor (out of remorse) was actually the one who helped Boots get away by intercepting Soo Sun’s witness report. Pan Seok was too into working on that case that he lost his only child.

Pan Seok discovers a bug planted by Dae Gu.

Dae Gu started off as the attacker but ends up being unconscious.

After he recovers (clearing most of his misunderstanding with Pan Seok), Dae Gu wants to kill Boots but saved Boots from his pursuer.

While posing as a real couple for an investigation, real feelings were at play instead.

Tae II got stabbed while trying to protect the pendant, the most important evidence of Ji Young’s mother’s case.

Further development in their relationship.

Dae Gu’s so-called stepmother killed his mother, believing that Dae Gu is her husband’s son.

While trying to catch the bad guy who has too much power, Dae Gu risks his life.

You’re all surrounded (2014) 你们被包围了

Genre: Mystery, Crime, Romance, Action, Thriller

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

you r all surrounded

starring Lee Seung Ki as Eun Dae Gu / Kim Ji Yong, Cha Seung Won as Seo Pan Suk and Go Ah Ra as Uh Soo Sun.

The child actors acted very well, especially the one who played Ji Yong. The drama is definitely a thriller at the start. They solved many different cases even though they ruined the 1st 2 by starting up a fight when they are undercover and letting their guards down. The 3rd one was solved due to luck. They were actually held hostage at a food stall and the one who held them hostage with some high school girls even let a gas leak, threatening that he will kill them. The funny part is Dae Gu and Soo Sun were handcuffed together and they have to pretend that they are a couple to prevent themselves from being found out that they are police. So funny that four people are needed to catch a captor and tie him in a dead knot.

After that, Dae Gu’s identity is slowly revealed and he even got stabbed by the same person who was hunting him down 11 years ago. When they thought that the case was closed, it actually wasn’t and the bad guys are still trying to get rid of him.

At first, Pan Suk thought that they will just cause disasters but changed his mind after that. Looks like there’s a will, there’s a way. Even Dae Gu starts to like his job. Learnt that interest can be developed after sense of accomplishment is felt. Teamwork is important. As they gather their strength, they can solve crimes. A police is a police after all. They have to chase criminals even when they are on a date haha. As it reaches the end, sadly, there does not seem like there is a major climax and the main part of the drama emphasises Dae Gu’s misfortune.

You who came from the stars (2013-2014) 来自星星的你

you who came from the stars3

A super big hit and a must-watch! Starring Kim Soo Hyun as Do Min Joon and Jun Ji Hyun as Cheun Song Yi.

The interesting part is Min Joon changes job and registers for his death every 10 years. I wonder why people run away from him or report him to the police when he used his power to save others. It is so cool that he can stop time whenever he wants. He uses it to save Song Yi or show his love when he does not want her to know or to delete a love message he accidentally sent. If it is me, I would rather make friends with magical beings. Perhaps if I really meet one, I will also run away? Haha. Loved the fantasy in this drama a lot! His main magical abilities include stopping time, making things move without touching, teleporting, controlling lights and hearing things far away. If I can choose one, I will prefer teleporting. As my house is a long distance from school, I really want to be able to teleport. It will save time and the energy for walking. I also do not have to squeeze into packed public transports. I will also choose like Min Joon to live a short but meaningful human life than to lead a long but lonely alien life. Liked how the fantasy element fits into the plot well, giving thrill, making scenes more sad, helping the plot develop. Liked the scenes where Min Joon uses his power to make the invincible cold villain scared. “There’s something you dont know, you cant kill me.”

After the end of each episode, there are actually hidden scenes at the so called trailer part which one should not miss to get a better understanding of the drama. Liked how each episode includes a small part of Min Joon’s reflection or thoughts which adds depth to the character. Some of them are funny as whatever he says contradicts with what happened with Song Yi. Some show how humans and the reality are like. Some are heartbreaking, especially his crying scenes and those about him going to leave the earth. Became a fan of Kim Soo Hyun after this drama and he even manages to become top 3 on my favourite Korean actor list for some time.

Liked how Min Joon’s past is nicely added to form the background story of Min Joon. Enjoyed watching Min Joon’s drunkard scenes where he misuses his power instead of keeping them a secret like making many things float in the air or causing blackout of a whole city or teleporting home with someone. Liked how Jun Ji Hyun portrayed the emotional struggle of Song Yi despite how her character is naive and straightforward. She adds a lot of humour to the drama. Liked the scene where Song Yi manages to prevent herself from getting killed by pretending she is on the phone. Enjoyed watching the development of relationship and chemistry between Min Joon and Song Yi.

Liked the many distinct characters in this drama. Liked Hwi Kyung as the second lead. Park Hae Jin manages to make his character likable. Hwi Kyung pursues Song Yi since young and is persistent to marry Song Yi which shows his loyalty. He is willing to sacrifice his life to protect Song Yi. He is from a rich family but uses his power appropriately. He is smart and manages to uncover the secret in his family. Another character that I liked is Yoon Jae. My sister felt that Ahn Jae Hyun is good-looking when she first saw him haha. Liked how he stands up for his celebrity sister when people criticise her. He adds humour to the drama when he interacts with Min Joon as he loves aliens and loves Min Joon’s telescopes. Didnt like how Se Mi is fake in her friendship with Song Yi. But her character is distinct and layered, making it interesting to watch. Liked the scene where Hwi Kyung advices her to take action and phone call her long-term crush and the expressions on their faces when Se Mi calls Hwi Kyung. Shin Sung Rok is good at acting as the villain with his evil smile, unreadable face and him not feeling anything when killing someone. Liked the relationship between Min Joon and lawyer Jang. He is the few who can accept Min Joon as he is, accompanies him, cares for him and helps him settle his affairs. It is funny when lawyer Jang criticises him as a friend haha. It is fun to watch when they have to pretend to be father and son to other people, even though Min Joon is a lot older than lawyer Jang. Song Yi’s manager and stylist are cute characters that worry for Song Yi. Liked how Se Mi’s brother is so persistent to uncover the truth. Song Yi’s friend who owns/works at the comic book cafe is interesting as she finds all opportunities to criticise Song Yi online but helps her when she needs it.

Why you should watch: The plot is fresh with romance+fantasy+historical to present+action elements. Every moment seems perfect and I was “chasing” (watching faster than it can be produced) after each episode one by one. Kim Soo Hyun is quite good at acting sad scenes (in every drama) and Jun Ji Hyun makes scenes funny with her exaggerated acting. Both add icing on the cake, making this drama a success. The fact that Min Joon can get heart attacks (ep9,16,19) when his blood is mixed with human’s despite his magical abilities makes it more interesting.
