Singapore Drama Review 大英雄

Hero (2016) 大英雄

Genre: Family, Romance, Neighborhood, Comedy

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10

starring Shaun Chen as Zhou Fada, Chen Hanwei as Ye Xiaoying, Jesseca Liu as Zhang Weixiong, Ian Fang as Zhang Weikang, Paige Chua as Ou Jinxuan, Andie Chen as Ou Jinguang, Bonnie Loo as Guan Meimei, He Yingying as Guan Meiyu, Sheila Sim as Fan Fangfang

This drama is so funny when it started, was laughing my head off. Fada is smart and appears out of nowhere many times, and he is often saying weird things or a lot of philosophical wise words. Jinguang’s hairstyle and how he talks so slowly is so funny. Weixiong’s brother, Weikang, is a good-for-nothing and his interaction with Meiyu is interesting, especially hilarious when he was splashed with pepper accidentally by Meiyu’s sister, Meimei. And more… Never seen such a comedy in Singapore dramas so far.

Watched this drama partially because of Shaun Chen and partially because my mother happened to switch on the television. Liked Fada’s character a lot in this drama and my sister also liked that character after watching even though she is not a Shaun Chen fan like me haha. You will know why if you watch it haha. It is surprising that the drama has a reflective voice in it and there are many questions the drama posed like “what you want to do if there is only one thing left you can do”, and “will you still do something if what you do now will affect what you are tomorrow”.

I thought Jinguang will end up with Fangfang, so unexpected who he ends up with hahaha. (Shall not give any spoiler). Other special mentions to Bonnie Loo and Paige Chua, Pan Ling Ling who acted well in the drama. Moved by how Pan Ling Ling’s character and his husband are so loyal towards each other even though they are poor. Their trust towards each other is just so heartwarming. No matter how her mother-in-law tries to frame her, her husband still believes in her totally. And it is funny how her mother-in-law totally “slap her own face” when she opposes to her granddaughter, Weixiong, marrying seemingly poor Fada and Pan Ling Ling’s character says that it is fine since her husband (the mother-in-law’s son) is poor but good. Bonnie acted well as the naive and silly girl but her love story with the rich guy didn’t pull off well.

Wanted to dismiss this drama at first since the trailer is not attractive beside Andie Chen saying that the audience is his hero haha… But it turned out well at least until it suddenly had a plot twist which threw me off and almost made me drop it. That is after Fada leaves to use his talent in stock investing and comes back to find people in the neighborhood behaving completely differently. I skipped some episodes here and there, especially towards the end, including the part when Fangfang is betrayed by her boyfriend.

Singapore Drama Review 绝世好工

The Dream Job (2016) 绝世好工

Genre: Family, Revenge, Romance, Business

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 8.5/10

starring Hugo Ng as Zhang Qingdong, Shaun Chen as Zhang Junfeng, Jeanette Aw as Cheng Huishan, Rebecca Lim as Jiang Xinya, Zhang Zhenhuan as Zhang Lixing, Ian Fang as Lin Zijie, Sheila Sim as Yiqing, Bonnie as Xinya’s sister, Hong Ling as Xiaoxue

Greatly enjoyed the plot of using the offer of dream jobs to reunite with his children. Enjoyed how Hugo Ng acted as the father who is trying to make up for the time he did not manage to have to personally raise his children. His character is fun-loving and good at coming up with weird ideas or solutions. I wonder if he is a good father or not due to his womanising behaviour but at the same time there are the heartwarming scenes where he consoles or guides his children and hope for the best for each of them. It was fun to watch the selection process, especially the shocking (but funny) attack on Qingdong which aims to observe the participants’ reaction in times of danger if they are working for Qingdong. Even Junfeng is shocked by the sudden situation.

The children are very different in the way they behave which makes the process of them living together and working with each other more interesting to watch. Huishan is good at finance and capable in managing projects but she can be too stubborn and suspicious. Zijie is a carefree and creative person who likes to act and good at sweet-talking but he does not have much plan for the future and is overconfident. Lixing who spends the most time with their father is actually an adoptive child who thinks for his father and accepts the three people who are chosen by his father without a second thought. Xinya, although considered the outsider due to not having any blood relations to Qingdong, is well-liked by Qingdong for her compassion and her ability to nurse him. It is funny how their job scope includes being present on family day, going for morning exercises and even playing frisbee with Qingdong in the park. I laughed at how Huishan and Zijie do not like to be under the sun and overly prepare themselves with sunglasses and fans.

Felt heartbreaking at the touching scene when Junfeng finally gets to confront his father and let out all his hatred, sufferings and nightmares he endured without a father around. Shaun Chen portrays his character’s emotions well as well as how his character has two-sided: one with an ulterior motive and the side of kindness which is suppressed but sometimes unintentionally leaks out. Junfeng’s character of being observant and clever at manipulating people to suit his revenge plan adds more suspense and thrill to the family drama. I guess we should treasure family relationships when we can but would I be able to forgive family members if they make me go through so much hardships?

Enjoyed the development of relationship between Junfeng and Xinya. At first, I disliked how Xinya is willing to do anything for money but as the drama goes, her dedication to improve her sister’s health condition and her comfort provided when Junfeng needs it changes how I think about her. I also looked forward to scenes with Xinya’s sister, Xinling, and liked her growth as she changes from a despair person due to her handicap to a optimistic person who is eager to be able to walk again. It is nice to watch how she tries to match-make Junfeng and Xinya, and her excitement to have Junfeng as her brother-in-law.

Watched this drama due to Shaun Chen haha and of course the unusual plot of offering people with “dream jobs”. However, I felt that this drama is a bit slow in its pace towards the end. The crying scenes by Rebecca Lim and Shaun Chen could have looked better and more natural at the scene where Junfeng’s grandmother passed away haha. Special mentions to Sheila Sim and Hong Ling who acted well in this drama too even though I didnt write about them in this review. The ending rounded up the drama neatly and the children have a partner each. It is hilarious (but in a way acceptable) how they attempted to tie the ending to the start by making Junfeng give Xinya a dream job to become his wife. (I shall not give anymore spoilers haha.) Enjoyed it very much and was a bit sad to see it end.

Singapore Drama Review 虎妈来了

Tiger Mum (2015) 虎妈来了

Genre: Romance, Family, Comedy

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 9/10

starring Huang Biren as He Xuemei/Tiger mum, Yao Wenlong as Chen Kai, Julie Tan as Chen Huixin, Ian Fang as Chen Haowei, Aloysius Pang as Chen Haolian, Bonnie Loo as Chen Huiyan and Jeffrey Xu as Zhang Guoqiang.

Why must Singapore Dramas make the character’s name have double meaning? Is it for comical effect? In this drama, Haolian’s name sounds like another Chinese word which means boastful. This does serve a bit of purpose in this drama since it matches his personality. Haha. It is hilarious to see many people being afraid of Xuemei. Even rebellious Haolian did her biding on their first meeting. It is funny how Huixin turns out to be ghost-like after locking herself in the room for many years. Liked her angry looks a lot in this drama. She even lost her way back home and went into other people’s house. I enjoyed the scene where the family goes out to find Haolian after he left the house in anger. Haowei even musters his courage to demand the gangsters to let go of Haolian and stands his ground until Xuemei arrives. Liked the process of how Haowei becomes more confident of himself and securing his job. It was unexpected that the girl Haowei liked did not marry him…

Liked how Xuemei understands people so well that she can predict the children’s actions and help them out. I am impressed with her ability to provide maternal guidance even though she is not a mother yet. It is funny when she is asked to look after her sister’s 2 children. She confiscates their electronic gadgets, makes them play board games and do homework, much to the children’s unhappiness. Even the domestic helper secretly wishes that she is the children’s mother. Haha. It is fun to watch Guoqiang, an ex-prisoner, chasing after Xuemei, trying to win her heart. Especially when he calls her Xiaomei as if he is older than her, chocking Xuemei as a result whenever she hears it. The 4 children’s aunt is kind of annoying to me… She can neither solve the children’s problems nor can she settle her own personal affairs. The only good thing about her is that she accepts her husband’s children as her own. Liked how Margaret, the aunt’s daughter, adds humour to the drama.

Looks like children really need a person to guide them after all. It is difficult for them to grow well without the attention and moral support of an adult. While the children feel that Tiger Mum has interfered with their lives, making their lives more complicated by including them in other family members’ affairs, they are actually thankful to feel that they are a part of the family. My last takeaway: Family members should care for one another and not only bother about their personal affairs. A real family is one that members can share their woes and happiness and not live in their own worlds.

Singapore Drama Review 心。情

Finished most of this drama before it was screened and finished the rest recently. It is the first time that all the episodes are on toggle before it is screened on TV so good chance to finish it without waiting haha. Remember having an argument with my sister as she was keen on watching this drama while I wanted to do my own things so she watched 1/2 episodes without me haha… Doing this by memory.

Mind matters (2018) 心。情

Genre: Mental illness, Romance, Family, Comedy

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 9/10

starring Qi Yuwu as Zhuo Jinshu, Jesseca Liu as Qin Xiuxiu, Denise Camillia Tan as Zhang Siya, Shane Pow as Hu Ruiming, Teresa Tseng as Lu Haining, Florence Tan as Zhou Riqing, Chen Tianwen as Lu Liangsheng, Ivan Lo as Fang Zhixing

As this drama is related to psychology and Qi Yuwu is in it, I was attracted to it and decided to try it with my sister. First time seeing Qi Yuwu acting comedy scenes haha. This drama has a solid plot and the pace was good though it slows down a bit towards the end. The graphic in this drama, the plot and pace somehow make me feel that I am not watching a Singapore Drama but more of a Korean Drama. Maybe it is because the male lead has a traumatic or sad past that he wants to hide which is very common in Korean Dramas but not that common in Singapore Dramas?

Liked Qi Yuwu’s character, Jinshu, a lot in this drama. He is comical whenever he talks (with a soft voice my sister finds irritating) but maybe the words are meant to reach the subconscious? Haha. It is funny how the drama starts with him singing the toilet song. It is funny when he promotes his current occupation, the plumber, to others and gives them his flyers. While he hides his identity as a former psychiatrist, it seems like it is still second nature for him to discover people’s mental illnesses and help them since he always somehow ends up being the source of help and someone dependable for those with mental illnesses in the neighborhood haha. Liked how he is sociable and good at forming relationships with anyone, a quality that is hard for me to develop haha. Liked the soft toy that Jinshu hugs at night haha. Liked Qi Yuwu’s acting throughout the drama and liked how he portrayed the emotional struggle his character faces as he is disturbed by a traumatic event he cannot escape. As his character is confident, carefree and seems to have everything under control, there is a greater contrast seen compared to other characters when his helplessness is shown. It is sad that for mental illnesses, although you may be well-aware of how to treat others, it is hard to treat yourself and you have to be brave enough to confront your own fears, guilt or any strong negative emotion first.

It is funny when we are introduced to Xiuxiu. When a person who wants to rent a room in the house visits it, the person sneezing and all the germs and dirt the person brought was magnified. Xiuxiu’s reactions were funny. Although I know that a person with OCD is suffering inside when they are obsessed with doing something, I cant help but had fun watching Xiuxiu clean the house multiple times, especially at one scene where Jinshu plays chess with Liangsheng in the house to show him Xiuxiu’s true self and let Liangsheng consider if he can accept that part of her. Jinshu even has to raise his legs while playing chess and she seems to clean the house the whole day. Liked the development of relationship between Jinshu and Xiuxiu. It is fun to watch Jinshu and Xiuxiu bickering a lot at the start and I liked how Jinshu has his own way to deal with Xiuxiu’s rebellious son, Zhixing, as they live under one roof. As the drama goes, Jinshu and Xiuxiu start to accept each other and gradually become each other’s great support.

Liked Ivan Lo’s acting in some dramas but somehow he just doesnt get awards for his good acting. I guess it is due to the roles he acts in. Anyway, the awards usually dont end up where I wanted them to haha. For this drama though, I feel that he didnt totally become the character. The anger his character often portrays feels a little forced. However, I liked how his character adds some evilness to the plot. As his character suffers from anti-social personality disorder, he does not have much feelings towards other people and would not feel anything if he harms others.

Although Zhixing and his mother, Xiuxiu, cannot communicate well, I liked how they look out for each other and protect each other with or without the other party knowing about it. Enjoyed watching the growth of Zhixing as he learns to better communicate with others towards the end and finally being able to reciprocrate the love his mother gives directly. Liked the friendship between Ruiming and Zhixing. When Zhixing is unhappy, he can seek refuge at Ruiming’s house and play video games with him. Ruiming who doesnt go out of the house often can take care of him like an elder brother. They dont have to talk much to communicate with each other. Liked Zhixing’s way of talking in the drama and my sister and I laughed at his last scene of appearance when he makes a short and frank comment on Ruiming and Siya’s interaction.

Liked the development of relationship and chemistry between Ruiming and Siya. Enjoyed watching their interaction as their relationship grows. It was awkward at the start as Siya’s clothes drop to Ruiming’s apartment’s clothes hanging area (?) and Ruiming was seen dancing with it by Siya haha…After that, Ruiming becomes a great help to Siya as he is good with websites and coding. As they become closer, they also help each other overcome the psychological illness they each have. Felt that Ruiming’s gesture whenever he tries to say no is cute haha. Liked how Siya likes to tease him after they become friends. The confession scene was sweet and funny. Found the scene where Ruiming chases after the bus to stop Siya from leaving hilarious. The scene is quite common in dramas but I think it is the first time I see the male lead manages to get up the bus because the bus broke down. It seemed like he wont be able to get up the bus as he was having a hard time chasing it haha. Liked their acting in this drama! They managed to portray not only the characters well, but also the psychological illness each of them has. Liked how they each portrayed the character’s emotional struggle when they are affected by their psychological illnesses. Admired how they are resourceful and are able to make good use of their area of expertise or strengths to earn money. May become a fan of each of them after this drama haha. Liked this couple a little more than the Jinshu+Xiuxiu couple. Maybe because they have more chemistry than the Jinshu+Xiuxiu couple? Or is it because they are younger and more relatable to me haha?

Special mentions to Teresa Tseng (character suffering from Bulimia Nervosa), Florence Tan (character suffering from Bipolar disorder), Chen Tianwen (character suffering from Paraphilia) who acted well. It is funny that so many types of mental illnesses are gathered at the neighborhood haha. Although Haining, Jinshu’s former patient and now a psychiatrist, has good intentions in pushing Jinshu to seek help and move on from the past, I didnt really like her most of the time as she forces him to change and also wants him to like her back. Liked how they dedicated a drama to mental illnesses to spread awareness about them. Mental illnesses are actually quite common but people somehow treat them like a taboo and feel fearful about people with such illnesses. I guess this is the only sg drama I enjoyed this year. Dont know if I missed out any other good ones?

Feel that this drama is lucky as I usually dont put so many pictures haha.

Singapore Drama Review 你也可以是天使

You can be an angel too (2015) 你也可以是天使

Genre: Medical, Family, Romance

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10

starring Zoe Tay 郑惠玉as Wang Ruojun 王若君, Bryan Wong 王禄江as Xie Yaozong 谢耀宗, Elvin Ng 黄俊雄 as Fu Jiazi 傅家梓,Rebecca Lim 林慧玲 as Guan Xinni  关馨霓 , Xu Bin 徐彬 as Fu Jiaren 傅家任 , Sheila Sim 沈惠怡 as Liu Youle 刘佑乐, Jayley Woo 胡佳琪 as Dai Xiwen 戴希雯, Aloysius Pang 冯伟衷as Li Longhua 李龙华.

The case that touches me the most is Tianxiang’s case. He is a teenager who suffers from brain cancer and passes away soon after. While his peers may be envious of his long leave from school, he just wants to be well and doing what his peers are doing, including sitting for examinations. I cannot imagine the suffering due to the physical pain and mental depression a patient like this faces. It is heartbreaking to see him pass away at such a young age, especially when his parents desperately want him to live. At least he manages to realise his dream and experience being a pilot. This suggests that a short life with dreams is more meaningful than a long life without goals. I don’t think I will ever want to be a doctor or nurse. Although I can help to alleviate their pain, I cannot prevent a patient from passing away. Imagine seeing so many heartbreaking cases in my everyday life…

Bryan Wong’s character added a lot of humour into this drama with his funny, incredulous blurt of “What?!” whenever he does not understand Xinni or with the  funny descriptions he makes. I admire how he is so thrifty (or to the extent of stingy) yet he gives others so generously. He even washes his clothes and bathes at the same time to save money from using his house’s water. When he can simply buy and give others, he would rather make it himself, no matter it is food or clothes. Even his planned wedding does not include a grand banquet as he thinks that it is the affair of just the 2 of them. On the contrary, he gives the grandmother who sells magazines $100 and helps many families in need with his time and money. When he is hospitalised and almost died, I am touched that many of his beneficiaries want to visit him and give him well-wishes.

It is shocking to see (between Xinni and XYZ) that there can be so many misunderstandings one can make of another person. It is sad to see that many of the patients have unfilial children. Some even have no choice but to make another patient his/her guardian who helps to make decisions which is kind of ridiculous. I sympathise with Youle for being badly treated at her brother’s house. In order to make money, her brother and his wife made Youle sleep in a cramp storeroom so that they can rent out Youle’s room. There are many unfair restrictions and “neglect” Youle faced. On the other hand, when her brother faces financial problems and addiction to gambling, she does not hesitate to help out. It is funny how Jiaren keeps changing job from a person who writes critics to lifeguard to actor…

Singapore Drama Quick Review 真探

Just finished watching this sg drama. Finally come across a sg drama worth watching! Nowadays, the plots of sg dramas just dont captivate me. After this drama, I may dig out some old ones to watch.

Wanted to watch a crime drama but then I dont want those that are too solemn or serious, and just nice this drama is portrayed in a less dark manner and make murder cases less haunting for me haha. This may be a disadvantage for sg dramas if compared to crime dramas from other countries haha. For my case, I just had fun relaxingly seeing how cases are analysed.

Singapore Web Drama Review 勾魂使者

soulreaper

This is a pretty short drama consisting of just 8 episodes. Attracted to this drama because of Romeo Tan’s mysterious acting as a soul reaper in the trailer but end up liking Ian Fang’s character, Soul. His name totally matches this drama haha… How I wish Ian Fang (or maybe all the actors) has this hairstyle more often in dramas (am I being influenced by kdramas haha?).
