Girl who can see smells (2015) 看見味道的少女
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Fantasy, Crime
Enjoyment: 9/10 Pace: 10/10 No. of times I watched it: 1
Plot: 3 years ago, Choi Moo Gak (Yoochun) lost his younger sister in the“BarCode Murder Case”. He has lost his sense of taste and touch eventually after drowning in depression. Meanwhile, Oh Cho Rim (Shin Se kyung) miraculously survived in the same incident and successfully escapes from the murderer’s clutches with only her name known. Since then, she lost her memory but also gained the ability to see smells. As they meet coincidentally, they found that they needed each other: Cho Rim needs a partner to perform comedy while Moo Gak needs her help to solve police cases.
Zoom into characters: Choi Moo Gak lost his only kin, his sister Choi Eun Sul, as she has the same name as the only witness of the serial murderer. After he quits his job at the aquarium, he works hard as a police to promote and get his hands on the murder cases, determined to solve them personally. Oh Cho Rim’s dream is to perform comedy to make people laugh. However, in reality, her effort is getting her nowhere and she is mostly running errands in the troupe. Erasing the most frightening moments of her memory, she now lives as the daughter of a detective who resigned to protect her.
Really liked the fantasy part of this drama, how the smell can be traced to find things or people and how the scents can help in the identification of people and what they have done. It is funny that Moo Gak is good at doing comedy (haha) while Cho Rim can get to the bottom of crimes quickly and they are doing the job of what the other person is good at. Because of his sister’s death, Moo Gak without his sense of taste gobbles lots of food to fill up his empty heart. It is a pity that the sister has to die because of her name but it is needed in order for Moo Gak to be a police and meet Cho Rim.
It is fun watching Moo Gak regain his sense of touch. For example, he suddenly feels itchy at his nose or jerks because of his wound after a kiss. It must be tough living without the sense of taste and touch. Imagine not withdrawing my hand from the fire because I can’t feel and not being able to taste the delicious food… Liked the marriage proposal by Moo Gak when he writes words using perfume sprayed in the dark sky. It is simply romantic and unique for Cho Rim who can see scents. Wonder how the words last since the particles from the perfume would have diffused quickly haha.
The pace is really good in this drama. Everything just flows well and it is quick to know who is the murderer. The serial murderer (shall not give spoiler) is acted out very well and really gives people the fear, especially since he seems so kind. I even thought that Doctor Chun was the serial murderer but he ends up being the victim. Haha. The serial murderer even has a hidden room in his house to keep the captives. The serial killer’s face-blindness disease does help Cho Rim escape death a few times since he cannot recognise anyone unless they speak.
The police seems to be doing some work in this drama haha, especially Lieutenant Yeom and Moo Gak. It is dangerous yet brilliant that Lieutenant Yeom disguises as Cho Rim and acts as bait to find out the place the serial murderer hides the victims. It was cool when she turns around and shows herself to the murderer much to his horror and shock for catching the wrong person. Towards the end, I think the police becomes so reliant on Cho Rim’s ability that they can’t even solve crimes without the couple and even prevent them from going for honeymoon… The police, especially the chief, was so arrogant at the start when Moo Gak begged to join their team and after that he is depending so much on Moo Gak to save his own reputation.
Why you should watch: It is a quick drama with great suspense and fantasy. Liked the development of relationship between Cho Rim and Moo Gak. Enjoyed how the police solve the cases together and the hilarious scenes when the couple is doing comedy performance/ practising comedy skits. The barcode serial murder case is quite unique.

Blood (2015) 血
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Medical, Action, Vampire
Enjoyment: 8/10 (due to the ending) Pace: 9/10 No. of times I watched it: 1
Plot: Despite seeming cold and unfeeling, Park Ji Sang masks his soft heart and inner pain and yearns for closeness with people. He suppresses his thirst for blood to treat terminally ill patients and save lives. While he starts to fall for Ri Ta, his warm heart is activated. He also has to stop Lee Jae Wook (Ji Jin Hee), a two-faced hospital chief who inwardly harbors a dangerous ambition for power and has a talent for cruelty as he continues to undergo an inhumane research.
Zoom into characters: Park Ji Sang is a vampire doctor who struggles to become a human. With his outstanding medical skills, exceptional personal healing ability and fighting skills, he has cured many patients even at battlegrounds. While he is able to control his thirst for blood using medicine for the time being, he soon finds out that it does not work anymore. Yoo Ri Ta was saved by Ji Sang from a pack of wild dogs in the past when she lost her way in the forest near Ji Sang and his mother’s house. Her parents were killed at that time and she was the only survivor of her uncle’s conspiracies. She is then raised by her uncle and eventually becomes a talented but arrogant doctor in the hospital her father built up.
This drama makes it such that vampires are just infected people. Liked the drama at the start when he tries to hide his identity of being a vampire while working at the hospital. He seems like a person without feelings when showing his cold-hearted side. He bluntly tells the patient how long they can live and treats them with scientific reasoning without any care. While humans want to live forever by becoming vampires, Ji Sang on the other hand actually wants to become human.
It is fun to watch when Ri Ta gets closer and closer to finding out about him. Ri Ta even misunderstands him as having some psychological illness like panic attack when he drops the scalpel during surgery as his medicine was exchanged for a fake one. Besides that, she is worried for Ji Sang whom she thinks has a deadly illness when all his measurements such a blood pressure are abnormal. In addition, she thinks that she is crazy after seeing Ji Sang’s wound healing by itself. The scene filled with flowers where Ri Ta tries to make Ji Sang sweet-talk is extremely funny. Ji Sang’s bed really looks like a coffin. Haha. It was sweet when Ri Ta wears winter clothes in order to be with Ji Sang in that cold coffin-like bed.
Liked Hyun Woo a lot in this drama. He is Ji Sang’s friend, partner and caregiver. He is a brilliant researcher and discovers that there are indeed vampires in the world (which no one believes). Because of that, Ji Sang depends on him to find a cure for him to become human. He has a very cheerful personality and cares a lot for Ji Sang. Enjoyed how his robot Luuvy adds humour to the drama, especially when communicating with Hyun Woo. The robot even saves Hyun Woo’s life once.
There is a twist which shocked me and perhaps kept me going in this drama. Really surprised by how Ga Yun is actually a vampire helping the vampire chief. Son Soo Hyun acted very well as the innocent-looking trainee and changed completely when it is known that she has an evil side when following orders and dealing with Ji Sang behind his back. Glad to see that the vampires also have feelings. Towards the end, they start to feel that what their leader is doing is wrong and oppose him. Disliked the ending a lot,
especially when Hyun Woo is killed. It would have been better if Ji Sang’s team is able to find a cure to treat those people under the vampire chief’s research and if there is more conflict about Ji Sang being human or not+ Ri Ta’s possibility of getting the heredity deadly illness.
Why you should watch: The first few episodes got me chasing this drama and it kept me addicted until the last few episodes. Liked Ahn Jae Hyun and Koo Hye Sun’s acting in this drama. Unlike other vampire dramas, it is interesting that Ji Sang chooses to be a doctor which is a job that good vampires are unlikely to choose/ avoid choosing because of their thirst for blood. Although it is a bit too violent for me, it has enough tension and thrill.
