Mask (2015) 假面
Genre: Mystery, Romance, Melodrama
Enjoyment: 9/10 Pace: 9/10 No. of times I watched it: 2
Plot: A melodrama about people who live wearing ‘masks’ to hide their true identities. Byun Ji Sook (Soo Ae) has always had a hard life with her father constantly going into debt. She desperately wants to know what life is like if she didn’t have to worry about money all the time. Due to a series of circumstances, she assumes Eun Ha’s identity and begins to live her elite life. She marries Min Woo (Joo Ji Hoon), a chaebol heir who is mistrusting of the people around him. Min Woo soon becomes drawn to her sincerity and her feelings of love and sympathy. How long can Ji Sook keep up the charade and hide her true identity?
Zoom into characters: Ji Sook lives a tough life and works as a shop assistant at a department store. After getting into an accident with the loan sharks, she becomes involved in Suk Hoon’s conspiracy. Suk Hoon wants her to replace the brain-dead Eun Ha who resembles Ji Sook. In order to take revenge for his destroyed family, Suk Hoon aims to use his wife, Mi Yun, and get rid of Min Woo to take over the company and let the family live in tragedy. Min Woo with OCD and hallucinations marries Eun Ha (Ji Sook) to establish more power in the company and eventually plans to inherit his father’s company. He feels remorseful towards Eun Ha as he thought that he made Eun Ha drown. What he does not know is that his wife is being switched and his psychological illness is made worse by Suk Hoon.
Liked the chemistry between the lead couple a lot! Enjoyed how they often repeat lines said by each other to show their care and concern and how cheesy they are at times. The relationship is extremely romantic as the drama progresses haha. I have a soft spot for dramas that involve marriage before there is real love. As I am someone who treasures relationships between family members, I just like dramas that try to work out love of the couple by letting them be family members first which is the case for this drama. It is fun to watch Min Woo slowly falling in love with Ji Sook, acting and saying things that he usually would not, like initiating to sing the birthday song for her and giving many excuses for not buying another bed or saying comically that he is emotional at night.
The scene that he carries her to the bed and his look when she wraps her arm around him is just perfect. Haha. Their divorce counselling is quite engaging. I liked how the twist is put in place with Ji Sook finally stepping up for Min Woo instead of continuing to follow Suk Hoon’s plan. Soo Ae acted the contrast in the character very well from weak and defenseless to being able to see through Suk Hoon’s plan, giving him a shocking retaliation. Liked the last episode but Min Woo and Ji Sook’s child does not look like them…haha.
Impressed by Suk Hoon who is such a good liar that is not even the least affected when he tell lies. This makes him such a powerful villain who can easily manipulate others even at the times that his lies are almost being detected or exposed. He does succeed in trying to ruin the family in a way. However, he also throws away his own happiness as a result. He could have lived a fulfilling life with Eun Ha whom he loves instead of using her as part of his revenge. It is a pity that Eun Ha passes away because of that. I feel sorry for Mi Yun who only yearns for Suk Hoon’s love. Her struggle in the drama to be happy and loved made her departure more heartfelt. Although I dislike her for indirectly leading to a few deaths, I liked how her character adds depth to the drama as she struggles to choose between protecting Suk Hoon and her stepbrother, Min Woo.
Why you should watch: Liked the romance in this drama and the acting by the actors and actresses, especially Joo Ji Hoon and Soo Ae. Become a fan of Joo Ji Hoon after this drama. I looked forward to his scenes when watching the drama and the pace of the drama is good enough to make me chase after it. As long as one can hang in there until Ji Sook changes and opposes Suk Hoon, it is worth the watch.
