Korean Drama Review While you were sleeping WYWS

Finished this drama about end of last year. Doing this by memory. Hope I get the details right haha. Finally have some free time to finish this up after much delay…

While you were sleeping (2017) 當你沉睡時

Genre: Fantasy, Law, Romance, Crime, Family

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Lee Jong Suk as Jung Jae Chan, Nam Da Reum as Jung Jae Chan (young), Bae Suzy as Nam Hong Joo, Lee Sang Yeob as Lee Yoo Bum, Jung Hae In as Han Woo Tak

At first, I didnt think much of this drama as the title didnt attract me. But after seeing fantasy in the plot, I decided to try it with my sister who is a fan of Lee Jong Suk. It is interesting but I didnt chase after it as much as I thought I will as it goes. Compared to I hear your voice, this drama seems more bland haha. Fortunately, the fantasy element in this drama is sufficient to keep me going as I usually drop law/crime related dramas. It is quite a thriller, especially when they have to deal with life and death situations.

While they may be able to change certain future completely, it is interesting that there are future that just dont change no matter how hard they try or change slightly, and some become worse nightmares. Liked the clever plot twists in the drama where unforeseen circumstances can happen and one action can make a big difference. While some dreams that they dream about still come true, I liked how they can actually accept what will happen or think of ways to better respond to the event. Learnt that although some things will happen no matter what, it is our mindset and response that can change the outcomes associated. It is funny when the dreams also show daily life events instead of just serious or life and death events. For example, Hong Joo seeing Jae Chan’s daily life habits, and Jae Chan seeing Woo Tak hugging Hong Joo in his dream and run to prevent it.

Liked how the relationship between Jae Chan and Hong Joo started and developed. Jae Chan managed to prevent Hong Joo’s car (?) from hitting Woo Tak which prevented many negative consequences. The scene where Hong Joo hugs Jae Chan marks a nice start to their relationship with the nice scenery and just right atmosphere. After that, it is fun to watch Hong Joo think that Jae Chan likes her but is proved otherwise and when she tries all ways to recruit him to join her in preventing bad dreams from happening in real life. Liked the chemistry between them and how they become source of comfort and support for each other as the drama goes.

Enjoyed watching the solid characters, Jae Chan and Hong Joo, (portrayed by Lee Jong Suk and Bae Suzy) and how they respond to events. Liked how Hong Joo is headstrong and outstanding at work. It is hilarious when her capable superior is sometimes fearful of her. It is fun to watch her craziness and how her feelings are readily reflected on her face. Jae Chan, on the other hand, is less expressive, more cautious and less confident. It is fun to watch Jae Chan’s surprised, worried or flustered face. It is funny how he shows a confident self at the front but starts pulling his hair and beating himself up for what he said at the back. Admired how Jae Chan is very sure of what is right and wrong and is not wavered under pressure. Enjoyed watching how they become better at handling situations and their emotions.

Enjoyed watching how Jae Chan solves each case effectively even though he is slow and considered too careful by his colleagues and superior. Looked forward to how Jae Chan solves each difficult case in his own way. Liked how there seems to be moral lessons associated with each case. The case that left the deepest impression on me is the one that a writer’s assistant is killed by the writer. There is a moral dilemma as the writer’s assistant becomes brain-dead and can save 5(?) patients through organ transplantation but an autopsy is needed to find out the cause of his death and arrest the murderer. No matter Jae Chan choose autopsy or organ transplantation, there will be negative consequences associated and he will lose his job as a prosecutor. One of the patients that could be saved was Jae Chan’s colleague’s (a single mother) young son. Touched when she asked Jae Chan to go ahead with the autopsy while her prosecutor boyfriend violently objects, and she explains that as a parent, she would want to know the truth of her son’s death more than saving strangers.

Liked Jung Hae In’s acting in Blood and was thinking how come I didnt see him before but realised he is new haha. Happy to see him again but too bad he is the second lead. It is nice that his character, Woo Tak, chooses not to form the triangle love and prefers to just quietly be part of unrequited love. Felt that the secret Woo Tak keeps about himself is not that big after all. Expected it to be something big like his brother was the one that killed both Hong Joo and Jae Chan’s father or something that can potentially break the friendship between Hong Joo+Jae Chan and him. Fooled by all the tension haha, seems like it is not the first time this happens in drama… Liked how Jung Hae In portrayed the struggle his character faces.

Felt that Lee Sang Yeob acted well to portray the evil and selfish lawyer who is exceptionally good at finding loopholes in the law to defend his clients and telling lies. But too bad he is up against righteous, smart, and careful Jae Chan haha… Special mentions to Shin Jae Ha who acted as Jae Chan’s brother, the actors acting as Choi Dam Dong (preferred the younger him haha), the young actors acting as Jae Chan and Hong Joo, and the prosecutor team. Liked how the prosecutors all have different characteristics and I enjoyed watching their interaction with Jae Chan which includes much humour. Liked the background story of young Hong Joo and young Jae Chan, as well as the concept of family in the drama.

Seven First Kisses Korean Web Drama

Seven First Kiss(2017)

Cast: Choi Ji Woo, Soo Jin, Lee Joon Gi, Park Hae Jin, Ji Chang Wook, EXO Kai, Taecyeon, Lee Jong Suk, Lee Min Ho

Episodes: 8

My review: Honestly, I watched this show because I wanted to know how they end the story. How the guys came here were like magic so I thought that they will actually be gone after that and Soo Jin finds her true love. It is actually quite difficult to choose among them as they all look quite good, so if I were her, I would not choose any but go back to my current state of life. Overall, the show is quite okay and it shows the different types of love that happen in drama.

Korean Drama Review W-2 worlds

W-2 worlds (2016) W-两个世界

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy, Metafiction, Suspense

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 9/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

w-kdrama

starring Lee Jong Suk as Kang Chul, Han Hyo Joo as Oh Yun Joo, Jung Yoo Jin as Yoon So Hee (Kang Chul’s secretary), Lee Tae Hwan as Seo Do Yoon (Kang Chul’s bodyguard), Kim Eui Sung as Oh Sung Moo (manhwa author/artist, Yun Joo’s father), Lee Shi Un as Park Soo Bong (Oh Sung Moo’s assistant)

Although people may complain that it is too brain-cracking as it goes, I found it quite a fun watch and like most of the crazy things like the “rules” that can allow Yun Joo to go back to the real world, rules that can allow Kang Chul to travel to and fro the 2 worlds and many others that are slowly revealed. There are also some moments that I found ridiculously funny such as when Yun Joo’s father lose his face (sry for the spoiler), and is controlled by the murderer in the story or that Kang Chul can summon characters to the real world by thinking of them as well. Besides making me question if there is another dimension and whether I live in the real world haha, this drama also makes me wonder if authors have the right to control characters’ fate (especially giving tragic ending) just like how in real life people in power tend to influence the fate of the weak without caring about what they think.

Found it funny when Yun Joo’s father’s assistant, Soo Bong, becomes more and more fearful of his job since evil characters are coming to life. Enjoyed how this drama portrays how the fans react to fictional characters with Yun Joo’s superior always wanting to find out what will happen next in the webtoon or criticising the plot twist (caused by Yun Joo), and people being excited when they see Kang Chul in real life. Sounds familiar in real life? The faceless murderer in hood really is scary. Kim Eui Sung acted well as both Yun Joo’s protective father, and the shameless and cunning villain. Funny how Yun Joo and her father’s life are so dramatically messed up by a webtoon, and they cant even control the outcomes in the story which brings about life and death situations to them too.

Love the relationship built between Kang Chul and Yun Joo and their chemistry, my most favourite part of this drama! It was fun to watch how Kang Chul keep thinking of Yun Joo and summoning her to his world much to Yun Joo’s exasperation. Liked their romance from how it starts: Kang Chul thinking of Yun Joo as the key to his life while Yun Joo is such a fan, to their lovely marriage to save Yun Joo, to their fight together against the villain and sacrifices made towards the end. Especially liked how Kang Chul makes the effort to use a book which depicts different romantic scenes as a guide and asks Yun Joo to choose so that he can follow through with it, so clumsy but cheesy in expressing his love!

Felt heartbreaking for Yun Joo when Kang Chul summoned her even though he lost his memory, making her come to his world briefly when she is in his subconscious. Knew that no matter what Yoon Joo will somehow be dragged into his world… Finally, liked Han Hyo Joo’s excited reactions a lot, especially at the start of the drama as well as how Lee Jong Suk depicts his character’s emotional struggle which adds depth to the plot and make his defiance and depressing times more moving.

Random drama quick reviews!

Hi, everyone! I still have two more examination papers but since I have a bit of time before the next paper I shall write a quick review of the dramas I watched so far.
~Dramas are really good stress relievers and medicine for the brain when we are fighting with examinations. But when overused, you may be overdosed. Lucky JM
Haha random quote time!

I finished watching W- 2 worlds and Let’s fight ghost long ago as well as kind of browsed through Shopping King Louie and I think I may write full reviews of them after my examinations are over. However, it will take me some time to recall what I watched haha.

I enjoyed both W and Let’s fight ghost with the nice chemistry as well as the plots, especially the intriguing plot in W which involves such creativity by employing metafiction.w
After watching W, my sister comes up with the crazy idea that maybe we are living in a book and someone is probably controlling our lives. Perhaps we should try to develop our free will and do the things that we want instead of letting the author determine our lives with his storyline? Haha. Liked Han Hyo Joo’s reactions a lot in W. Imagine meeting the fiction character you loved or idolised by simply landing in their fiction world or them coming out unexpectedly from the book hehe. Liked how Lee Jong Suk expresses his character’s emotional struggle.

letsfightghost
Really liked Taecyeon and Kim So Hyun in Let’s fight ghost. I know that Kim So Hyun is really good at acting and people may think that (besides the age gap) it is not suitable for Taecyeon to act alongside her but I just like how Taecyeon portrays his characters, making me root for him such as in Dream High.  Enjoyed watching Taecyeon’s character, Bong Pal, change after he meets Kim So Hyun’s character, the persistent and cute ghost.

shopping-king-louie
I had high expectations for Shopping King Louie with its cast and plot but it didnt meet my expectations haha. I like losing memory dramas but somehow this drama didnt make me enjoy it as much as I thought I would and the plot seems rather dull. Haeundae Lover was so much better for me. If the plot involved something like Louie and Bok Sil succeeding in creating their own brand with Louie’s capability to discern products, then gaining recognition despite not having his memory, and even managing to threaten the existence of Goldline, his grandmother’s company that his uncle managed to steal from him, it would be an interesting watch. There is just not enough conflict in this drama with the villains giving in too easily and Louie seems like a good-for-nothing that only knows how to spend money by shopping and pursue love. Perhaps if you want to watch a rom-com drama with little evil and all good you can try this haha.

Moving away from Korean Dramas, I had a sneak peak into You can be an angel too 2 and Fire up and found both not suitable for me.

fireup2
Fire up is a drama to recognise the contribution of criminals in the society and call for people to be more accepting towards them. The plot seems fine but I just didnt want to see repeated couple (from 3 wishes) played by Thomas Ong and Huang Biren again haha. When watching it, it also gives me the feeling of Run, Jung Mi, a long series korean drama that was on Channel U around that period of time so it didnt pique my curiosity much.

youcanbeanangel2               you-can-be-an-angel-too2                                                                                                                     From @xubin.carrie Instagram
I liked Rebecca Lim and Bryan Wong’s acting in You can be an angel too 2 but them alone cannot sustain my interest without Elvin Ng and Sheila Sim from the previous season. Xu Bin acts well as the nice guy and nurse that is in charge of sending people off in their last part of their life journey, and it seems like his acting has improved :). However, I didnt like the love triangle between him, Carrie Wong and Aloysius Pang. Although I am more of a fan of Aloysius Pang than Xu Bin, I just could not get myself to like Aloysius Pang’s character in this drama even though I know his character is just following the plot of going into a path he will regret later on. If Thomas Ong appeared more often in this drama, I would have considered watching the whole drama but he appears less than half the time. So, I guess I will be dropping it. At least I gave it a chance…

Besides, I suddenly went to watch a Chinese drama called Romance in the Rain which is a well-known drama long time ago in 2001.  After watching “I am a Singer Season 3”, I suddenly become a fan of Leo Ku, 古巨基. Haha…and next thing of course is to source out his dramas, expected of a drama fan. I was a bit disappointed when he has limited dramas but I still managed to find the one that he was most well-known for so yay I found it!

romance-in-the-rain

It is an around 50 episodes long drama and it was a bit draggy somewhere in between but overall I liked the plot and the cast. This drama is something like the tumultuous times in China due to the Japanese trying to conquer China as well. Zhao Wei, whom I know has a great reputation in acting, acted very well in it and it is so nice to see her in action since I seldom watch Chinese Drama.

romanceintherain4     romanceintherain5

Her character, Liping, has a strong personality and has bad relationships with her powerful father who married the 9th wife after her mother, and neglecting her mother and her as a result. Shuhuan (Leo Ku) is a news reporter who seems perfect from his great fighting skills to his eloquence in speaking. When both characters meet, at first Shuhuan wanted to dig out news from her about her family background but soon he starts to fall for her, defend her in many occasions, and help her patch up her relationship with her family (her father side).

Korean Drama Review Pinocchio PC

Pinocchio (2014) 皮诺丘

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Family

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 10/10  No. of times I watched it: 3

Pinocchio

starring Park Shin Hye as Choi In Ha, Noh Jung Ui as Choi In Ha (young), Lee Jong Suk as Choi Dal Po / Ki Ha Myung, Nam Da Reum as Choi Dal Po / Ki Ha Myung (young), Kim Young Kwang as Seo Bum Jo, Lee Yoo Bi as Yoon Yoo Rae.

When Ho Sang’s body is initially missing in a factory explosion, cold and calculating MSC reporter Song Cha Ok (Jin Kyung) alleges that Ho Sang survived and is currently in hiding because he was responsible for the deaths of his men (in order to gain more rating). I really feel sorry for the Ki family when they become outcasts in their neighborhood and objects of national scorn when they did not even do anything wrong. I am amazed at how Song Cha Ok manipulates the news including how she squat down to emphasise the severity of the flood which is supposed to only be knee-deep. It is even more surprising to find out that Song Cha Ok (under a superior’s order) manages to divert the anger of the public to Ho Sang and his family just by using news without real solid evidence.

It is a waste that such an intelligent person like Ki Jae Myung (Yoon Kyun Sang) ruins his future because of revenge. I agree with my sister that in this case I would be ironically happy that there is no death sentence for a murderer if not Jae Myung would be dead for killing 3 people. It is cool that Ha Myung read most/all of the books in the library while acting that he is stupid. It must be difficult to get zero for every test when he knows all the answers. I would set reading all the books in a library as my life-long goal. I liked how Ha Myung do things differently from Song Cha Ok even though he tries to take revenge. For example, he proves Song Cha Ok’s innocence instead of just being blinded by revenge.

Park Shin Hye acted as a Pinocchio very well, hiccuping very naturally. I would find it very hard to live life as a Pinocchio. Imagine that even hiding a truth will cost me sleepless nights of hiccups… Haha. Liked how the plot goes back to the start by making Ha Myung and In Ha’s friend the victim to the same thing that happened to Ha Myung’s family. Perhaps if news really affect me in real life (not negatively though) I may be more interested in them…Haha. I feel sorry for Bum Jo. Although his mother does it for him to lead a life in luxury, he has to face the sad truth of his mother’s bad deeds. It was funny when Yoo Rae keeps thinking that Ha Myung likes her just because of Bum Jo’s lies.

Korean Drama Review Doctor Stranger DS

Doctor Stranger (2014) 异乡人医生

Genre: Melodrama, Medical, Action, Thriller, Politics

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

doctor-stranger

starring Lee Jong Suk as Park Hoon – Goo Seung Hyun as Park Hoon (child) and Jin Se Yun as Song Jae Hee / Han Seung Hee. Other casts: Park Hae Jin as Han Jae Joon and Kang So Ra as Oh Soo Hyun.

I feel sad that Hoon’s father has to be sacrificed and his mother became mentally unwell. I think it was bad experience for Hoon when he has to cut up real life people to practise and become an accomplished doctor. The North is involved. I did not like it when the North and Premier Jang keeps interfering and trying to kill or separate the couple. They separated at the start and Jae Hee appeared again after Hoon gets a job as a doctor at Myungwoo University Hospital. Politics is involved as Hoon and Jae Joon compete to operate on the President’s heart.

Although some people are supportive of Soo Hyun and Hoon, I still prefer the couple that starts the story. Anyway, Soo Hyun already has Jae Joon to match with. I like what Hoon said “Doctors should be good at healing people while cops should be good at catching people.” It is difficult to decide if they should save the person that may endanger their lives but doctors should still follow their principle and treat each patient equally.

It was quite funny when Hoon 1st goes to the hospital. There are many lines with different colours on the floor of the hospital and patients are told to follow the lines. Hoon accompanied a patient and her father as a water delivery boy and they went round and round the hospital in search for the room. On a side note, I would not want to be patients of this hospital where patients are used for competitions and are not treated seriously by the hospital director. Haha.
