Korean Drama Review While you were sleeping WYWS

Finished this drama about end of last year. Doing this by memory. Hope I get the details right haha. Finally have some free time to finish this up after much delay…

While you were sleeping (2017) 當你沉睡時

Genre: Fantasy, Law, Romance, Crime, Family

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Lee Jong Suk as Jung Jae Chan, Nam Da Reum as Jung Jae Chan (young), Bae Suzy as Nam Hong Joo, Lee Sang Yeob as Lee Yoo Bum, Jung Hae In as Han Woo Tak

At first, I didnt think much of this drama as the title didnt attract me. But after seeing fantasy in the plot, I decided to try it with my sister who is a fan of Lee Jong Suk. It is interesting but I didnt chase after it as much as I thought I will as it goes. Compared to I hear your voice, this drama seems more bland haha. Fortunately, the fantasy element in this drama is sufficient to keep me going as I usually drop law/crime related dramas. It is quite a thriller, especially when they have to deal with life and death situations.

While they may be able to change certain future completely, it is interesting that there are future that just dont change no matter how hard they try or change slightly, and some become worse nightmares. Liked the clever plot twists in the drama where unforeseen circumstances can happen and one action can make a big difference. While some dreams that they dream about still come true, I liked how they can actually accept what will happen or think of ways to better respond to the event. Learnt that although some things will happen no matter what, it is our mindset and response that can change the outcomes associated. It is funny when the dreams also show daily life events instead of just serious or life and death events. For example, Hong Joo seeing Jae Chan’s daily life habits, and Jae Chan seeing Woo Tak hugging Hong Joo in his dream and run to prevent it.

Liked how the relationship between Jae Chan and Hong Joo started and developed. Jae Chan managed to prevent Hong Joo’s car (?) from hitting Woo Tak which prevented many negative consequences. The scene where Hong Joo hugs Jae Chan marks a nice start to their relationship with the nice scenery and just right atmosphere. After that, it is fun to watch Hong Joo think that Jae Chan likes her but is proved otherwise and when she tries all ways to recruit him to join her in preventing bad dreams from happening in real life. Liked the chemistry between them and how they become source of comfort and support for each other as the drama goes.

Enjoyed watching the solid characters, Jae Chan and Hong Joo, (portrayed by Lee Jong Suk and Bae Suzy) and how they respond to events. Liked how Hong Joo is headstrong and outstanding at work. It is hilarious when her capable superior is sometimes fearful of her. It is fun to watch her craziness and how her feelings are readily reflected on her face. Jae Chan, on the other hand, is less expressive, more cautious and less confident. It is fun to watch Jae Chan’s surprised, worried or flustered face. It is funny how he shows a confident self at the front but starts pulling his hair and beating himself up for what he said at the back. Admired how Jae Chan is very sure of what is right and wrong and is not wavered under pressure. Enjoyed watching how they become better at handling situations and their emotions.

Enjoyed watching how Jae Chan solves each case effectively even though he is slow and considered too careful by his colleagues and superior. Looked forward to how Jae Chan solves each difficult case in his own way. Liked how there seems to be moral lessons associated with each case. The case that left the deepest impression on me is the one that a writer’s assistant is killed by the writer. There is a moral dilemma as the writer’s assistant becomes brain-dead and can save 5(?) patients through organ transplantation but an autopsy is needed to find out the cause of his death and arrest the murderer. No matter Jae Chan choose autopsy or organ transplantation, there will be negative consequences associated and he will lose his job as a prosecutor. One of the patients that could be saved was Jae Chan’s colleague’s (a single mother) young son. Touched when she asked Jae Chan to go ahead with the autopsy while her prosecutor boyfriend violently objects, and she explains that as a parent, she would want to know the truth of her son’s death more than saving strangers.

Liked Jung Hae In’s acting in Blood and was thinking how come I didnt see him before but realised he is new haha. Happy to see him again but too bad he is the second lead. It is nice that his character, Woo Tak, chooses not to form the triangle love and prefers to just quietly be part of unrequited love. Felt that the secret Woo Tak keeps about himself is not that big after all. Expected it to be something big like his brother was the one that killed both Hong Joo and Jae Chan’s father or something that can potentially break the friendship between Hong Joo+Jae Chan and him. Fooled by all the tension haha, seems like it is not the first time this happens in drama… Liked how Jung Hae In portrayed the struggle his character faces.

Felt that Lee Sang Yeob acted well to portray the evil and selfish lawyer who is exceptionally good at finding loopholes in the law to defend his clients and telling lies. But too bad he is up against righteous, smart, and careful Jae Chan haha… Special mentions to Shin Jae Ha who acted as Jae Chan’s brother, the actors acting as Choi Dam Dong (preferred the younger him haha), the young actors acting as Jae Chan and Hong Joo, and the prosecutor team. Liked how the prosecutors all have different characteristics and I enjoyed watching their interaction with Jae Chan which includes much humour. Liked the background story of young Hong Joo and young Jae Chan, as well as the concept of family in the drama.

Dream High quotes (Korean Drama)

If choices were 100% they wouldn’t be choices. When they’re both 50/50, choose one and work hard to prove it’s the right decision and turn the 50% into 100.

Only if you have a dream you will know, in this world there is no such thing as a foolish dream.

~Jin Guk

Do you know what it means to become an adult? It means there’s less and less to smile about. So we’ll have to smile even more, even if we have to force it.

From the beginning, you were music to me and music was you. That’s why I came this far. If you are not there, there is no music.

~Song Sam Dong

Stubbornness is the excuse used by the loser. Stubbornness is really tiring, it looks ugly too.

~ Go Hye Mi

Korean Drama Review DH

Dream High (2011) 梦想起飞

Genre: Romance, Comedy, High School

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 9/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Bae Suzy as Go Hye Mi, Kim Soo Hyun as Song Sam Dong, Taecyeon as Jin Gook / Hyun Shi Hyuk, Ham Eun Jung as Yoon Baek Hee, Jang Woo Young as Jason and IU as Kim Pil Sook.
Plot: Dream High tells the story of six students at Kirin Art High School who work to achieve their dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry. Go Hye Mi is a student who had majored in classical music but has to give up her dream by entering Kirin Art High School to pay off her father’s debt. However, she needs to get two other students to also come to the school in order for her to enroll in the school conditionally. These two students are Song Sam Dong, who lives in the countryside, and Jin Guk, whom she accidentally meets while trying to escape from a loan shark. Yoon Baek Hee, formerly Hyemi’s sidekick, becomes her rival in school because Hye Mi betrays her during an audition to enter the school.

Sam Dong is good at singing but pretends he cannot sing due to his mother. Jin Guk is good at dancing but cannot realise his dreams as his father wants him to go overseas and study. Pil Sook is good at singing but does not have a good appearance. Hye Mi has a wide range of pitch but is too arrogant. As the few of them with weaknesses gather together, will they form a good team? Will they always be looked down by others as if they are rotten apples and never get a chance to shine?

Watched this drama sometime ago. Wanted Hyemi to end up with Jin Guk even though ending up with Sam Dong is not bad (sry for the spoiler). Love the couple Jason and Pil Sook. Despite Pil Sook’s appearance, Jason is always thoughtful towards her. It is interesting that a teacher grade the students’ singing according to how many people in the audience paid attention.

Dreams are important. With dreams, one can achieve more than they can imagine. Everyone has their own talents. One should not look down on others. Even the worst teacher can lead a group of students with weaknesses as long as he has the heart.

Why you should watch: A high school drama that consists of Bae Suzy, Kim Soo Hyun, Jang Woo Young, Taecyeon, Ham Eun Jung and IU! It is interesting and content-rich as they try to prove their talents.

Gu Family Book quotes (Korean drama)

Don’t ever do that again. Keeping secrets from me, you don’t need to. Never again in front of me, pass by me like I’m a stranger… Look at me. I like you. I like you a lot.

~Kang Chi

Whatever happened 20 years ago, it was before we were born and is the elders business. So, please don’t push the past onto us. Elders’ business is to be solved by the elders.

~Kang Chi

(1st time hearing this in korean dramas. Good job, Kang Chi!)

You told me yourself that there are no evil people in this world. That there are just bad situations.

~Yeo Wool

Don’t be afraid of what you chose. The moment you lose yourself in fear, you will lose everything. The opposite of trust is fear.

~Wol Ryung

Korean Drama Review Gu family book GFB

Gu Family Book (2013) / Kang Chi the beginning 九家之书

Genre: Fantasy,  Historical, Romance

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 10/10  No. of times I watched it: 2

starring Lee Seung Ki as Choi Kang Chi and Bae Suzy as Dam Yeo Wool, Yoo Yun Suk as Park Tae Seo, Lee Yoo Bi as Park Chung Jo, Sung Joon as Gon Yi

Plot: Choi Kang Chi is born as a half-human-half-mythical-creature and abandoned. His father is the guardian god of Jiri mountains while his mother is a human. His father saved his mother and their story began as they fell in love with each other. Little did they know their love will turn into a tragic love ending with his father turning into an evil spirit. The story of Choi Kang Chi and Dam Yeo Wool started as they were fated to meet each other by a cherry tree. Like his father, he did not manage to become a complete human as his bracelet came off before he turned 20 years old. Will Choi Kang Chi follow his father’s footsteps as he tries to obtain the Gu Family book to become human? Will their story turn out to be a tragic love as predicted by the fortune teller?

On top of the tragedy Kang Chi faces, his adoptive family’s inn was being snatched away. The lord who adopted him was killed and he was framed as murderer. Someone who he treats as brother was put under hypnosis to kill Kang Chi whenever he could. Liked the acting of Yoo Yun Suk through his eyes even though his character seems quite useless at times and often gets used by the bad guys haha. Enjoyed watching how Kang Chi resolves the problem. Instead of being angry at Tae Seo, he warms Tae Seo’s heart to break the hypnosis. The adoptive family’s daughter was sold to the gisaeng house. I didn’t really like the parts on gisaeng. Sadly, both Tae Seo and Chung Jo who treats Kang Chi as family rejects him once they see his monster self.

I am touched by the scene that Yeo Wool can still hold Kang Chi’s hand after he turned into a monster with claws. Liked the development of relationship between Yeo Wool and Kang Chi from filled with mistrust and misunderstandings to helping each other, protecting each other, dependence and understanding. There is a memorable scene that is a unique plot twist in their relationship. It is when Yeo Wool ignores and walks past him as she thought that Kang Chi injured her father (blood on Kang Chi’s hand) for killing his father in the past. When she discovers that he did not, Kang Chi did the same by ignoring and walking past her but ends up giving her a surprise back hug. Felt that scene is cool and the tension is just right!

Enjoyed how Kang Chi always saves the day when needed, helping them defeat the bad guys. Although Kang Chi has self-healing ability when he takes out the bracelet, he still is able to feel the pain if injured. Besides the emotional struggle of Kang Chi, Lee Seung Gi acted well for feeling pain, especially one of the times when he is hit by arrows and they have to pluck them out one by one. The interesting part is his parents do return after all…though in different forms. Loved the fantasy of the drama where both Kang Chi and father are able to grow plants with their power and have the blue lights surrounding them when in mythical form. Found Gon Yi a likeable character even though he likes to prevent Kang Chi from getting closer to Yeo Wool haha. Too bad he stands no chance against Kang Chi since Yeo Wool has never thought of him as a partner but more as a comrade.

One of the important figures in this drama said that there are many humans that act less like human yet Kang Chi sincerely wants to become human so he looks forward to what kind of human Kang Chi wants to become. How does the word humane come about? Does it mean that being human means one is compassionate? Is that why humans harm others and the environment? Actually, people are scared of creatures that they are not familiar with but these creatures are actually more harmless and kind-hearted than they think haha. I hope to become a person that people respect, lead a meaningful life and spread kindness in my society.
