This review is quite late since I was considering if I should continue watching the last few episodes or not. Decided to write the review regardless before I forget the details or lack the motivation to write it. Just realise that there are a few dramas that I didnt write the review because I didnt manage to watch the last few episodes like Man living in the house, Legend of the blue sea, Cheese in the trap. I watched this drama until ep 14. There seems to be one episode towards the end that contain mostly kissing scenes (if i didnt remember wrongly) and I skipped through it. Doing this by memory.
What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (2018) 金秘書為何那樣
Genre: Office, Romance, Comedy, Mystery
Enjoyment: 10/10 Pace: 8.5/10 until last few episodes No. of times I watched it: 1
starring Park Seo Joon as Lee Young Joon, Moon Woo Jin as Lee Young Joon (child), Park Min Young as Kim Mi So, Kim Ji Yoo as Kim Mi So (young), Lee Tae Hwan as Lee Sung Yeon, Kang Ki Young as Park Yoo Shik, Hwang Chan Sung as Ko Kwi Nam, Pyo Ye Jin as Kim Ji Ah, Hwang Bo Ra as Bong Se Ra, Kang Hong Suk as Yang Chul
Liked Park Seo Joon’s romantic comedies. Park Seo Joon is good at acting romantic comedies haha. Is he the rom-com prince? Cant remember the title? He is good at being somewhat cold and distant/high up (warming up to the female lead later on) and good at making scenes more romantic. Didnt feel bored quickly when watching She was pretty and this drama, even though a pure romantic comedy usually dont work out well for me. I guess romantic comedies that involve some company context have better plot development and include more plot twists. And another factor that will make me continue watching a rom-com drama or non-fantasy drama is that the characters cannot lose their distinct characteristics as the drama goes haha.
Liked the characters, Young Joon and Mi So a lot. Liked the acting of Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young. It is hilarious how Young Joon is so narcissistic, praising himself, his face and his brain. Liked how Young Joon is smart and confident of himself. It is fun to watch how Young Joon has high standards at work. For example, how he picks out a mistake his friend+subordinate makes and states the precise long string of numbers. His meetings are so intense for people working under him haha. Felt that it is good to have high standards at work but I guess some amount of stress will come along with it if it is me haha. Liked how Mi So is elegant, determined and confident. She is a very good assistant and secretary of Young Joon as she understands him well and can figure out what he needs quickly. She is also a good middleman between Young Joon and his subordinates, relaying his messages in a nicer way. Mi So’s shocked face looks fake and overdone but it nicely portrays the inner awkwardness she feels and a flaw of the seemingly perfect secretary. Liked how both are capable and good at many languages.
Liked the development of relationship and chemistry between Young Joon and Mi So. The bickering and tension is just nice.
Enjoyed watching the perfect date that Young Joon plans for Mi So, including the amusement park rides, the dinner that Young Joon cuts the steak for Mi So, watching fireworks on a ship and ending with Young Joon giving a big soft toy to her. Young Joon manages to sneakily find out what Mi So wants to do for her dates and fulfill all the things she wrote haha! Because of that, she cant even date other people because when she compares the dates with Young Joon’s one, they seem a lot worse.
Felt that the characters, Young Joon and Mi So, are compatible. Liked how Mi So works with Young Joon’s narcissism well and even uses it to add value to a company’s project (ep 4 blackout scene) which shows how Mi So is able to accept this part of Young Joon and is in great rapport with him. Mi So is the only person that is able to tell Young Joon off and Young Joon only cares for Mi So. Both Young Joon and Mi So care a lot about not just doing the best but winning. Mi So helping Young Joon with his tie is romantic haha, even though I feel that it is overstepping the boundaries of a secretary…
Liked how there is nice transition in the relationship building. Liked how Young Joon starts pursuing Mi So once she wants to quit the job to do what she wants to do. Park Seo Joon nicely portrays his shock and fear of losing Mi So for the first time when she tells him that she wants to quit. This part shows a little of Young Joon’s helplessness and vulnerability unlike his usual confident self as he tries all ways to keep Mi So by his side. Another significant part is the fallout between Young Joon and Mi So. Young Joon tries to lower himself and do some of her secretary jobs for Mi So but it ends up backfiring as Mi So actually takes those small things she does with pride. Liked how the struggle was portrayed when Young Joon and Mi So try to adjust how they treat each other so that they are equal in the relationship. It is quite difficult to completely separate their roles at work versus when they are not but I liked how they make the effort. It is funny that after they had an argument, both of them choose to retreat and in their minds, they hope the other would read his/her mind that he/she wants to reconcile haha.
Liked the kiss scene where Mi So helps Young Joon overcome the fear that he feels whenever he closes his eyes. Felt that the scene was well-executed and a deeper emotional meaning was added to the kiss scene. It is funny how Young Joon can still answer people in his sleep haha. Liked how Young Joon and Mi So both portray their emotional struggle regarding a past traumatic event. Felt that Young Joon’s emotional struggle has a higher intensity. Dont think suffering and hardship are usually emphasised in rom-com dramas. Young Joon seems to only think for himself most of the time which makes his gentleman scenes more sweet haha. For example, how he tells Mi So to think for herself (if i didnt remember wrongly) or when he calms Mi So down and offers her a sweet when she sees spiders which she is fearful of or when he makes all his staff go for spa together to let the workaholic Mi So relax. It is nice that he tries to persuade her to stop uncovering the past to protect her from harm.
Was touched that he prefers to carry the weight of the traumatic event all by himself (Sorry for spoiler). The comedy scenes are nicely intertwined with the romantic scenes in the drama.
Liked the friendship between Yoo Shik and Young Joon. Liked Kang Ki Young’s acting in this drama. And I just realised that he is actually in many dramas I watched haha. His roles in dramas are so different from one another. The character, Yoo Shik, adds a lot of humour to the drama. Liked how he gives dating advice to Young Joon and also assists him well at work. It is interesting how he is close friends with Young Joon haha. Probably because of his happy-go-lucky personality and how he is smart in his own ways? It is funny how Young Joon coldly suggests giving him more work when he is sad about his ex-wife and goes to Young Joon’s office to share his sorrow. Yoo Shik’s interaction with his secretary is funny. It is ridiculous how his secretary makes mistakes all the time and is clumsy. For example, mixing up the drinks and giving him her diet drink instead of his tonic drink.
The other couples and employees in the company are nice tidbits and are interesting to watch but I guess I didnt like the couples enough. The couples are the man with only one suit and many buttons+new Secretary Kim couple, the chauffeur secretary (?)+loud and cheery woman couple. Liked how the employees have distinct characteristics. It is fun to watch them interacting with each other and they add humour to the drama. I feel that there is nothing wrong with being poor. Even if people say that I did well despite my family background like in Gwi Nam’s case, I will just be proud of myself haha and not be affected negatively like Gwi Nam. Liked how Ji Ah and Se Ra stand up for Mi So when people talk negatively about her. Laughed a lot when watching the meeting at the company retreat (that Young Joon unexpectedly shows up at) as Young Joon asks the staff to use their facial expressions to portray their own vision for the company.
Liked the acting of the child actors/actresses which brings out the background story and the emotional struggle of the two lead characters well. Didnt like Sung Yeon as a character since he appears in the drama haha. Too bad that he is actually quite good-looking. Felt that there is not enough character development and emotional struggle for Sung Yeon. Could have added more depth into the relationship between Young Joon and Sung Yeon to make Sung Yeon more likable. Liked the concept of family in this drama.
I chased this drama due to the mystery in it. However, after the truth is uncovered, the tension and suspense that captivated me to watch is gone and I felt like dropping it. The mystery seems to be holding up the drama and once it is gone, the attractive part of the drama seems to collapse with it. Hope I can finish the last few episodes one day.
