Korean Drama Review NLJDH

Since one of my friends looked for my review of this drama and asked me about it when she could not find it, I may as well write it before I forget about the drama’s details haha. Doing this by memory.

Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul Ho (2016) 鄰家律師趙德浩

Genre: Comedy, Family, Law, Crime

starring Park Shin Yang as Jo Deul Ho, Kang So Ra as Lee Eun Jo, Ryu Soo Young as Shin Ji Wook, Park Sol Mi as Jung Hae Gyung, Kim Gab Soo as Shin Young Il

I sneak peeked into it when my mother was watching and ended up watching the later episodes with her. The prosecutor, Deul Ho, is excellent at his job and has unusual ways of making the truth come to light haha, winning every case that he manages to get his hand on. For example, he throws a fake spider at the defendant to cut short his act of sitting in the wheelchair and acting ill to gain sympathy. After that, his life becomes a mess when he tries to prosecute a rich and powerful man, and he even becomes a beggar because of that. Sadly, the friend he made at that time was killed by the rich man’s son and burnt, and he somehow becomes a lawyer to defend the person who was framed for his friend’s murder. After that incident, he attempts to make a comeback and only takes on cases that is in relation to the rich man and his son to make them pay for the crimes they committed.

It is funny how every case/most of the cases throughout the drama are somehow linked to the rich man and son haha. They really committed so many crimes… Amazed when watching how Deul Ho wins each case by all means using unusual and creative methods, and ways a lawyer should not have done. For example, when defending the person who was framed for his friend’s murder, Deul Ho told the defendant to read what he witnessed from a script Deul Ho writes for the defendant which is not ethically right. However, as the defendant tries to memorise and read out the prepared script in court, he ends up remembering what he witnessed that night at court. It is satisfying to watch the rich man and his son’s anxious looks during or after each case, even though the rich man is still powerful enough to ensure his son and his “safety”. However, I feel that Deul Ho is quite biased, only focusing on cases that can cause harm to the rich man and son but I wont say that what he is doing is wrong since he only has a certain amount of time and attention and he cant possibly take every case.

It is interesting to watch the interaction between Deul Ho and his friend, a loan shark. At first, they meet as prosecutor and criminal. Somehow, the loan shark often commits many minor crimes or is being framed, and keeps going to see him to be prosecuted which is how their friendship developed. For most of the parts of the drama, his friend is the one giving him a place to live and giving him the help he needs to solve cases so it shows that we will never know who will help us in times of need haha. Enjoyed watching Deul Ho’s secretary’s exaggerated reactions and facial expressions, and the way she supports Deul Ho in whatever he does.

Liked the development of relationship between Deul Ho and Eun Jo. For a moment, I thought Eun Jo is his separated daughter that grows up to be a lawyer but that is not the case haha. At first, Eun Jo disapproves of his methods to defend the client when working with him but ends up forming an admiration for him, and eventually works with him after resigning from a law firm that mostly defends the rich and powerful (the law firm wanted to get rid of her for her mistake). Was hoping that she will end up with another prosecutor which is righteous but pressured by his father to help the rich man (not sure if that happens because I didnt manage to watch the last few episodes). He is often compared with Deul Ho by his father which makes him unhappy (happens often in dramas). Glad that he manages to see through the evil plans, and get out of his father’s control to do what is right towards the end. His father is an evil and cunning villain who pretends to be a follower of powerful people but is actually the mastermind.

Liked the interaction between Deul Ho and his young daughter which is heartwarming as they keep each other company, make each other happy, and the daughter gives good advice to her father. It is sad that they have to be separated after Deul Ho’s divorce with his wife. His wife wanted stability for her family, and also to protect her father’s law firm which makes me feel that she does not love Deul Ho enough haha. Glad that his wife and his wife’s father change towards the end if not I wont be rooting for the couple/family to reunite.

When I first saw the poster of the drama, I didnt feel like watching it due to lack of eye candies/actors and actresses I like but it turns out to be a thrilling ride with much unexpected humour and twists.
