Korean Drama Review IB

Introverted boss (2017) 內向的老闆

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Family, Introversion

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 9/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Yun Woo Jin as Eun Hwan Ki, Park Hye Soo as Chae Ro Woon, Yoon Park as Kang Woo Il and Gong Seung Yun as Eun Yi Soo

Zoom into characters: Hwan Ki is a mysterious introvert who works at the background at his father’s public relations company Brain as a Co-CEO with his best friend, Woo Il, who is always in public eye. Ro Woon has a cheery personality. She once worked in musicals but after her sister’s suicide, she becomes less outspoken at home, and starts to work at the public relation company to dig out the truth behind her sister’s death and to take revenge on the CEO that is rumoured to cause her sister’s death. Woo Il feels guilty for Ro Won’s sister’s death and is afraid that people will find out about it, wanting Hwan Ki to hide the truth. Yi Soo, Hwan Ki’s sister, wants to hold on to Woo Il by all means. Beneath her happy and innocent exterior, she is actually insecure, hurt, and ruthless.

Enjoyed how Yun Woo Jin portrays his character and the character’s emotional struggle! It was a bit exaggerating at the start, somehow his introversion is portrayed more as a mental disorder. As the drama goes, the character is intriguing and quite relatable to me. The shyness, thinking too much and being afraid to interact with people and express opinions: for example the scene where he is unable to tell the barber what hairstyle he wants to cut when he was young, are things I have experienced before or may still experience. It is funny whenever he has long self-dialogues and complicate things for himself before finally reaching a justifiable conclusion in his mind. Sometimes, when that happens, he misses the opportunity to speak haha. It is hilarious when he often dashes away in times of “crises”. I laughed the hardest at the scene about Ro Woon’s ugly face in the phone (watch it to find out). My sister finds his character the cutest of dramas she has seen haha.

Liked how his penthouse office is portrayed as dark and mysterious at the start: Hwan Ki in a black hoody, sharpening his pencils by using a knife in the dark, his whole cupboard filled with many different types of knifes haha when people open it. How convenient that Hwan Ki mostly lives at his penthouse office.

Enjoyed watching how the character, Hwan Ki, grows as he is forced by his father to lead a team of people with distinct characteristics: a mother whose work is affected by her children, a rich family’s son, a person overly critical about others’ work but not producing enough results, a quiet and sensitive person who is lacking in many areas. Most ought to be fired due to their lack of ability so they are sent there. Ro Woon is sent there by Woo Il who feels that her cheery personality can change Hwan Ki. At first, he cant even talk to his team properly or give presentations but slowly manages to join them in meeting, trips and gatherings. Liked how he eventually gains the respect of all his team members and helps them maximise their potential with his keen observation and listening ear. He also manages to gain the trust of his clients with his firm and quiet ways.

Liked how the relationship between Hwan Ki and Ro Woon develops as Hwan Ki opens up more and more to Ro Woon. I read some negative comments about Ro Woon as a character but to me, it was fun to watch her bubbly but reflective nature and her understanding towards Hwan Ki which helps him step out of his comfort zone and leads him to improvement. Impressed by Hwan Ki’s almost-to-be girlfriend who separated with Hwan Ki due to a misunderstanding. She is spontaneous and does not mind a fair competition with Ro Woon or giving up on Hwan Ki even though she knew Hwan Ki earlier and it is mainly Hwan Ki’s fault that they didnt end up together. How I wish most supporting characters are like that!

Woo Il and Yi soo’s relationship is small titbit to the drama and I am happy that they have resolved their relationship and make it a healthy one. Both of them have their strengths and weaknesses and it is nice watching how they play major roles in Hwan Ki’s life. Hwan Ki tries to protect them but sometimes creates more mess haha. From this, I learnt that even as observant introverts, we should not assume that we know everything and we should ask what others think before jumping to conclusion. Liked how Hwan Ki is close to his younger sister, Yi Soo, their sweet interaction and how he cooks delicious meals for her at his office hmmm. Wasnt totally convinced with Ro Woon’s sister’s suicide story but at the moment I cant think of something better that can replace it as Ro Woon’s sister’s story is a major piece in the plot development. :\

Why you should watch: Enjoyed watching this drama a lot! Didnt expect much from it at first due to negative comments about it and how it stopped screening for some time for changes to be made. Became a fan of Yun Woo Jin after this drama. Liked how they dedicated a drama to amplify characteristics of introverts who are often misunderstood in daily life. The characters are well portrayed and the pace is just nice, at least for 5/6 of it.

Between Friendship👫and Love💑Korean Web Drama

Between Love and Friendship (2017)

Cast: Baek Soo-hee, Jaeho, Jo Hye-Won

Episodes: 8

Recommendation: 8/10

My review: I was really bored yesterday as I did not have a show to watch and I came across this web drama which is about two friends who are more than just friends but not lovers. What I really like about this drama is the sweet and short plot despite it being a very plain story plot of friends wanting to be lovers but do not know how to and how they got together in the end.

KBS drama special episodes review

Hi everyone haha!

Due to a lack of dramas that can entertain me a week, I tried watching kbs drama specials with my sister but it didnt turn out too well haha… Every week, I wait for While you were sleeping to be screened. But I remember that when I chased I hear your voice, the anticipation feeling was higher. Tried Borg Mum but after a certain episode when Go Bong becomes extremely worried that he has fallen in love with a robot and escapes from the problem, it didnt attract me anymore. Black is too crime related and involves too much details, though its creepiness and grim are attractive. Even if I do continue, it will be a quick browse through. Hospital Ship, to my sister, is too mature for her liking. I am still continuing it myself mainly to see Kang Min Hyuk haha and the romance between the lead couple, even though I am not entertained enough by the drama.

Kbs drama special episodes I watched in one night

What is the ghost up to? (2015)

Liked Lee Joon’s acting since seeing him in Gap Dong and Vampire Detective though I didnt finish both as they are crime related dramas that didnt quite suit my taste. In this one episode, his character is quite funny with his hilarious angry outbursts or his crazy screaming when he sees the ghost haha. His girlfriend broke up with him and her reason/criticism haunts him. Although he does well academically, he seems crippled by her remarks and cannot get a job or move on well in life…until… one day, she returns and wants him to find her boyfriend. He is angry but pities her and decides to help her which leads to a surprise revelation. Shall not give too much spoiler haha. Towards the end, I actually felt tears flowing out of my eyes even though I skipped through certain parts in between towards the end. At the first time I watched, I was hit hard due to the words she wrote in her notes and the second time I watched with my sister that night, it was at the final “pop goes the weasel” part.

You can watch it in Youtube.

Next, I decided to watch something that looks nice on the cover.

If we were a season (KBS Drama special 2017 Episode 1)

Like the title haha! The development of the relationship of the lead characters is well portrayed from young to their high school days and nights, showing how they play or pass messages through a window between their houses from young to how they naturally watch out for each other in school. The scenery and weather fit nicely with the plot and beautifies the story. It is a typical love triangle story but I liked the lead couple’s acting and chemistry. Liked Jang Dong-Yoon here more than in School 2017. Jin Young’s character has no place in between them haha. My sister is a fan of Jin Young but she says he looks out of place as he doesnt even look like a high schooler, like the rest of them haha. She feels that when he jokes with Chae Soo Bin’s character, it felt cold instead of cheesy. I was quite baffled by the family background story towards the end. When I reached the ending, I felt like shouting at the screen “No…Why?!” :/

Things seem to be going downhill.

Finally, my last episode of the night

Waltzing Alone (KBS Drama special 2017 Episode 4)

When I looked at the title, I should have been warned. But unfortunately, when I browsed through YouTube quickly, none of the pictures or plots of other drama special episodes attracted me so I thought I should give it a try. Maybe it will turn out to be a beautiful heartwarming story?

The story especially at the start is beautiful but unfortunately it wasnt heartwarming but heartbreaking. The lingering regrets and heartbreaks of the episode, especially when they had their final breakdown, was hard to get rid of haha. And when I am writing this, the feeling is coming back aaahhhh. Loved the dancing of waltz (something I want to learn one day haha) as the theme throughout the episode, especially at the start where the scenes showed how the lead couple danced through life together, depicted through the different attires and locations as they dance and dance and dance. (Yeo Hoi-Hyeon looks more and more good looking as the episode goes haha.) It is romantic and whenever they dance or are in the waltz footwork they seem blissful, shielded from the harsh reality of the world.

However, the reality of the competitive corporate life and the pressure to get a permanent job soon catch up with both of them as they are rejected by one company after another. When they had to compete for the same job position, it turns out to be a cruel battle which could have been resolved if they decide to have a fair competition. 😦

Lesson learnt:  Not going to have too much kbs drama special in one dose since it is bound to affect my mood. Maybe once a month haha? Wonder if all of them end up sad? Haha, but I think I will stay away from them for a while…  If you are looking for a so-called movie or want to borrow something’s help to cry and release stress or just want to feel “stabbed” or give yourself a reason to be sad, maybe you can try them.
