King of baking (2010) 面包王子金卓求

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Action

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 10/10  No. of times I watched it: 2

king of baking

starring Yoon Shi Yoon as Kim Tak Goo, Eugene as Shin Yoo Kyung, Lee Young Ah as Yang Mi Sun and Joo Won as Gu Ma Jun.
Plot: Kim Tak Goo is the eldest son of Goo In Jong, the president of Samhwa Enterprise, a legend in the baking industry. Although he is an extremely talented baker and seemed destined to succeed his father as president, Goo In Jong’s family plotted to rob him of his inheritance because he was born to In Jong’s mistress. Tak Goo’s determination to become number one in the baking industry drives him to rebuild his career from scratch despite the many trials and tests he faces.

Zoom into characters: Tak Gu drops out from elementary school and fights his way with one thought in mind: to find his long lost mother. The amazing thing is he got a unique sense of smell which can tell when fermentation is finished so that bread can be baked to their best. He finally finds the kidnapper in a bakery and his life start afresh as he starts to wash his hands in flour instead. Yoo Kyung is Tak Gu’s first love and will break up with Tak Gu as she is blinded by revenge against the lady of Samhwa Enterprise. Mi Sun likes to bake cake more than bread. She will help Tak Gu along the way as he learns about baking bread from scratch.

His determination is what keeps the drama going. Scenes to look forward to include the trial when he is being tied to another competitor and they have to make sure the rope does not come off or they are eliminated from the competition. Teamwork has been developed after this trial and they can bathe, work and sleep without inconvenience. He also has to overcome his phobia of fire after being burnt once. He has to pass the tests of making the most filling bread, most amusing bread and happiest bread. Most filling does not mean putting lots of fillings into it. Hunger is the best sauce for food. The test for making the most filling bread actually tests if the person cares for others, whereas most amusing bread actually tests if a person is creative and embraces challenges. The happiest bread is what a baker will make everyday.

There is still prejudice against females. Females are less likely to be the boss of the company. Goo In Jong does not allow her eldest daughter to learn about the business and only allow sons to learn and follow him when he visits the company. Hence, his daughter has to start from the bottom of the company and work her way up. Education is able to change a person’s life. Even if one is not born in a rich family that does not mean one cannot succeed. I feel that this is the best drama Yoon Shi Yoon acted in so far with a good portrayal of the mixed feelings his character feels. Joo Won acted as the bad guy quite well and Yoon Shi Yoon’s character’s competitor. He acted so well that I dislike his character when I seldom dislike the bad guys. Haha. He is able to express anger through his eyes alone.

Why you should watch: Will regret if you do not watch this! It is a content-rich drama with a heartwarming storyline which does not focus on romance. It will make one want for more after watching one episode as you will want to know what happens next. I enjoy watching the many tests and trials Tak Gu faces at Pal Bong Bakery where he competes to make the best bread for each test.
