Singapore Drama Review 知星人

Finally have a sg drama that attracts me haha! In 2017, maybe I missed out certain good dramas? I peaked into Home Truly, The Lead, Dream Coder but they didnt attract me.

My friends from afar (2017) 知星人

Genre: Family, Fantasy, Romance, Comedy

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10

starring Shaun Chen as Yang Tiansheng, Carrie Wong as Chen Fengjiao, Paige Chua as Yang Tianning, Aloysius Pang as Chen Xianglin, Brandon Wong as Chen Xiaolong, Toh Xin Hui as Chen Qingxia, Yao Wenlong as Zhou Zhiqiang, Eelyn Kok as Xu Xinmei, Wang Yuqing as Yang Zhongyong, Sheila Sim as Queen

This drama is very funny at the start when the four of them first come to Earth and I laughed a lot. They find it fascinating walking on Earth and keep walking up and down the steps. It is also funny when Fengjiao forces Tiansheng to eat oranges as punishment for cheating them of their money and Tiansheng happily eats it until she forces him to eat the orange peels too… Besides that, they are shocked that there is a drink called Dinosaur and readily order it when asked by the person selling drink. It is hilarious when Tiansheng tries to frighten them by wearing a ghost wear and roller-skate into their house, and they just look closely and blankly at him. Tiansheng’s father pretends to be some China (?) zombie and scares a few neighbors but ends up being scared by his own reflection when Tiansheng shows him a mirror made me laugh my head off haha.

Enjoyed watching how the aliens have special abilities such as great strength, the ability to read mind, freeze people, fly, move things without touching, go into people’s dreams, heal, erase people’s memories. It is cool how they can fly, and sit in the air and play chess (?), and move the cups of water from the kitchen to bedroom with their power. It was romantic when Xianglin goes into Tianning’s dream and brings her to outerspace, and when Fengjiao makes snow fall for Tiansheng. Some of the scenes felt unreal to me though, not sure if it is because of the portrayal of the aliens or because of the background of the scenes. I was expecting that one of the people who had their memories erased will suffer negative consequences, especially Guanjun since he is young and his brain is still growing. If nothing happens after they erase a memory, it would seem like it is fine to erase people’s memory which is not morally right. If something happens to him, his mother will care about his health more than being concerned if he obtains excellent academic results which is a more meaningful plot twist to me.

Liked how each episode starts with a theme/topic of discussion as the aliens explore human behaviour, and I liked the cool and unique dance/workout only the aliens do though I missed some since I didnt watch from catch-up tv but straight from the television when it is being screened, and I was late to turn on the TV haha…Also liked the hand sign they show when answering leader Fengjiao. Liked the development of relationships between the Yang family and the aliens. It is funny that the Yang family’s 2 children who have very different personalities fall in love with the 2 aliens. Xianglin’s pregnancy scenes are interesting haha and it was fun watching a guy doing most of the things a typical pregnant woman would have done.

It is interesting how the aliens have to purposely take lessons from Leopard King (Tiansheng) to learn to lie haha. This makes me wonder if learning to lie is an essential life skill to survive on Earth and it is sad that this is the case. However, lying may be a good way to prevent unhappy happenings such as when using white lies? It is funny when the aliens criticise humans harshly at the start of the drama such as humans’ efficiency. Liked how Fengjiao is always actively trying to change people for the better which I secretly want to do too haha… People are indeed wasting too much food and it would be good if I can force people to eat their food up like Fengjiao… At the end of the drama, the aliens praise the goodness of humans which I think is not totally true. If the humans find out who they are, would they still treat them in the same way?

Enjoyed watching the interaction between the 4 aliens as they start to become a family and take care of one another, look out for one another, especially liked the interaction between Qingxia and Xiaolong. It was sad when Xiaolong is seriously injured and saying his final goodbyes. I could feel tears in my eyes when watching that scene. It was heartwarming when Qingxia calls Xiaolong “Dad” at his final moments even though she previously hates how “her father” is treating her more and more like a human child. About 1/2 of the times Singapore Dramas’ crying scenes cannot bring me in completely but that scene is well-executed with good acting and I can feel the emotions in that scene.

Managed to guess who the alien who betrayed them to live among humans is and felt a bit annoyed that they go one whole round suspecting and end up back where they started. Maybe I am nitpicking haha. Although I felt sorry for Zhiqiang’s predicament, it is too bad he has chosen to go on the wrong path. Felt that his mother could have trusted him more throughout the drama and not only at the good times. Feel that Yao Wenlong is acting more significant roles which is good haha…

Felt that the ending could have been better if there are more and longer scenes to portray Tiansheng’s longing as he waits for Fengjiao’s return instead of just flashing his flashback scenes so quickly. How can so many years of waiting be so bearable? Overall, it is a good watch, a meaningful drama with nice fantasy and humour, and great acting from the cast.

Ruby Ruby Love Korean Web Drama

  ruby ruby love 2

Ruby Ruby Love (2017)

Cast: Seohyun as Ruby, Lee Chul Woo as Won Suk, Lee Yi Kyung as Na Ji Suk (CEO of a jewelry enterprise), Z.Hera as Yoo Bi Joo

Episodes: 5

Recommendation: 7/10

Review: This drama is about Ruby who is very good at designing jewelries and have a good eye for good jewelries. She has a social anxiety disorder and dislikes going to places that are unfamiliar. Ruby has a friend, Lee Chul Woo. He crushes on Ruby and regrets that Ruby cannot demonstrate her abilities because of her social anxiety. He works very hard to help her achieve her dreams and stay by her side when she needs it most.

Due to Ruby being good at designing jewelries, she won an award for her jewelries and had to attend an award ceremony. However, her social anxiety disorder was stopping her from attending the award ceremony. She was in a dilemma whether she should go for the award ceremony as it was an opportunity to promote her own jewelries.

When she was in a dilemma, she discovered a ring that allows her to be confident in front of others for three times for a few hours. She decided to use the ring so that she could receive the award confidently. In the award ceremony, she managed to meet her one year crush, Na Ji Suk, who is the CEO of a jewelry enterprise. Na Ji Suk decided to work with Ruby to make jewelries. Ruby used the ring again to go out with Na Ji Suk to do jewelry research and date with him.

Ruby designed a jewelry for a competition(do not know whether it is the correct information because I watched this some time ago). Yoo Bi Joo, Ruby’s rival since high school until now, shared Ruby’s jewelry design to the outside so that Ruby will lose the competition. Ruby had to find a new design for her jewelry in a rush and make it. While making the new design, Ruby will also find out that Lee Chul Woo actually likes her. Besides sharing Ruby’s design to the outside, Yoo Bi Joo also gave wrong information to Ruby about the time of the competition so that Ruby cannot use the ring to make herself confident in front of others. Ruby was troubled as she could not use the ring but love helped her to solve the problem and present to the judges in a confident way.

Long Series Kdrama Review Cheongdamdong Scandal

Doing this review by memory.

Cheongdamdong Scandal (2014) 清潭洞丑闻

starring Choi Jung Yoon as Eun Hyun Soo, Kang Sung Min as Bok Soo Ho, Lee Joong Moon as Jang Seo Joon, Seo Eun Chae as Nam Joo Na, Im Sung Uhn as Lee Jae Ni, Kim Jung Woon as Bok Kyung Ho

As the couple Hyun Soo and Soo Ho started out as a loving couple, I expected that they will break up at the end of this long series drama which happens sadly. At first, I didnt quite want them to separate as Soo Ho manages to stay firm against his domineering mother to marry Hyun Soo and their marriage life is romantic but as he slowly loses the trust of Hyun Soo by lying to her later on, I guess the couple cannot last any longer. Too bad because the actor who acted as Soo Ho is quite good-looking haha… While Soo Ho’s mother seems to accept Hyun Soo and treat her like her own daughter, she is actually waiting for their divorce and giving her contraceptive pills disguised as nutrient pills to prevent them from having children. Because Hyun Soo’s mother is a single mother and was a maid (if I am not wrong), her mother-in-law just cannot accept her. She worked very hard to raise her two sons and become rich and wants her sons to marry people who match their family status, especially her elder son, Soo Ho. But of course, she will get her own retribution later for the bad deeds she did.

Liked the couple Seo Joon and Hyun Soo and the development of their relationship as the drama goes. Found how they first meet each other quite funny. If I didnt remember wrongly, Hyun Soo was singing to some child through the phone in the lift (both of them were in) to calm the child down and Seo Joon keeps thinking about it after that and laughing about it. They actually met in the past when they were children. The difference between Seo Joon and Soo Ho that I noticed is that Soo Ho has to have Hyun Soo by his side but Seo Joon does not need to “own” her. Seo Joon has a phobia of water after his mother drowns to save him and Hyun Soo is better able to comfort him than Joo Na who only wants to force him to like her. Eventually, she is even able to help him forget about his phobia seen in an incident that he jumps in the swimming pool when she is bullied by Joo Na and she is pushed in or accidentally slipped into the pool. Also enjoyed the interaction between Hyun Soo and her best friend who may be slow at catching on but provides refuge when she needs it.

Another couple that is memorable is the Jae Ni+Kyung Ho couple. They were arranged to marry by Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother. Kyung Ho’s girlfriend and him were forced to be separated. Because of that, Kyung Ho holds resentment against his mother and is guilt-ridden towards his girlfriend. He makes friend with Hyun Soo and becomes close to her when they become in-laws. Hyun Soo makes him feel better when he feels suffocated in that house. He also admires Soo Ho for being able to go against their mother. Happy that he takes the advice of Hyun Soo and starts to make his arranged marriage filled with love. However, when that happens, sadly something bad happens to Kyung Ho (trying not to give spoiler) and I remembered being sad as it was quite a waste. I think after that, something happened to Jae Ni’s rich family and Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother abandons her and she seeks to take revenge.

Wow, seeing how I can remember so much about this drama even though I watched it quite some time ago, it shows that this drama is quite content rich and have many memorable scenes that captivated me haha or is it because I just happened to have more time at that time to sit in front of the tv and watch haha?
