Mirror of the Witch (2016) 魔女寶鑑

Plot: When Queen Shim (Jang Hee Jin) is unable to conceive, she visits the shaman Hong Joo (Yum Jung Ah). Hong Joo’s powerful black magic helps the Queen give birth to a twin boy and girl. However, the dark sorcery comes with a price: the twins are cursed but since Hong Joo can transfer the curse to one of them, Seo Ri is abandoned and ordered to be killed. Seo Ri is rescued by the father of Poong Yeon (Kwak Shi Yang) and Poong Yeon becomes her only friend as she grows up in hiding.

Zoom into characters:  Heo Joon is an illegitimate son of a noble and a slave. He is often bullied by his stepbrother because of his status. Heo Joon happens to chance upon Seo Ri’s house far in the woods and caught by Seo Ri as an intruder. They make friends thereafter. Seo Ri is unable to leave the hideout as the place protects her from activating the curse and Heo Joon keeps her company occasionally. On a festive day, Poong Yeon decides to defy his father’s wishes and let curious Seo Ri see the outside world for once. Her curse is thus activated and Hong Joo is able to locate her and send people to kill her. After a close escape from death, Seo Ri grows up as a witch with the help of Yo Kwang, all the while trying to figure out how to lift the evil curse on her. While saving Seo Ri, Heo Joon misses the departure time and his mother is killed by his stepbrother, leaving Heo Joon in grief and he plots revenge on his stepbrother.

Suspicious Housekeeper (2013) 奇怪管家

Plot: After Sang Chul’s wife passed away, Sang Chul employed a housekeeper to take care of his children and make the house clean and tidy. As the rumour goes, the housekeeper can and will do anything the employer says, even murder. She can do anything such as magic tricks, juggling and even cooking food with the same taste as what their mother used to cook. Despite her cool demeanor, she helped the children and Sang Chul in many ways by giving valuable advice.

Zoom into characters: Sang Chul is a breadwinner who seldom spends time with his children and has a secret affair. He does not know how to take care of the children and is too busy to tidy  the house so he employs a housekeeper. Bok Nyeo has a sad past and is told not to smile by her mother-in-law who thinks that she killed her husband and son. She is very capable and acts as the mother of the children while being the housekeeper. The children are depressed and their lives are turned upside down after their mother passed away. With the housekeeper’s help, they are able to continue their lives as normal and pursue their dreams.
