Dropped Korean Drama Review Still 17

Thirty but Seventeen/Still 17 (2018) 雖然30但仍17

starring Shin Hye Sun as Woo Seo Ri, Park Shi Eun as Seo Ri (teen), Yang Se Jong as Gong Woo Jin, Yoon Chan Young as Woo Jin (teen), Ahn Hyo Sup as Yoo Chan, Ye Ji Won as Jennifer,  Yoon Sun Woo as Kim Hyung Tae, Wang Suk Hyun as Hyung Tae (teen)

Watched here and there for this drama.

For Still 17, the big flaw that cant be ignored is the same as Where Stars Land which is that Woo Jin loses his distinct characteristics after some episodes. Liked how Woo Jin is weird, how he is a workaholic and how he doesnt care about what people think. Enjoyed watching how he goes around measuring everything with a measuring tape. Liked the miniatures he makes. Liked the interactions among the characters in this drama. Enjoyed watching the development of relationship between Seo Ri and Woo Jin and how Seo Ri slowly breaks the ice. Liked the story of young Woo Jin and Seo Ri. Liked the characters, Seo Ri, Jennifer, the 3 rowers, and Woo Jin’s colleague, and superior. Liked the more light-hearted feeling in this drama and the comedy scenes. It is a pity for Seo Ri’s doctor friend who sacrifices so much for Seo Ri after Seo Ri’s accident but doesnt become her lover. I guess the way to interpret this is that life isnt fair. Doesnt mean that if you do a lot, you will get what you want. There are many factors that can get in the way. Liked the relationship between Woo Jin and Chan, especially towards the end when he hugs Woo Jin (like when they were young) when Woo Jin cries and guards outside Woo Jin’s door to prevent Woo Jin from leaving him again. Woo Jin’s and Seo Ri’s emotional struggles could have been reasons for me to continue watching this drama but unfortunately they werent good enough to sustain my interest. It will be unfair to the other dramas that I dropped if I write a long review for this drama so I am not going to do so.

Scanned through Korean Drama Review Where stars land WSL

Doing this by memory. Finished scanning through it at around December 2018.

Where Stars Land/Fox Bride Star (2018) 狐狸新娘星

starring Lee Je Hoon as Lee Soo Yeon, Nam Da Reum as Soo Yeon (young), Chae Soo Bin as Han Yeo Reum, Lee Dong Gun as Seo In Woo, Kim Ji Soo as Yang Seo Koon, Lee Sung Wook as Choi Moo Ja, Kim Kyung Nam as Oh Dae Ki, Lee Soo Kyung as Na Young Joo, Ro Woon as Go Eun Sub

The pace for this drama is very good for the first few episodes until Soo Yeon’s confession scene. Chased this drama until there. There are many emergencies at the airport and I enjoyed watching how the staff deals with the situations. It is interesting to know about the happenings at the airport. Felt that Soo Yeon’s emotional struggle shines through in this drama. However, it was a pity that the distinct characteristics of the character Soo Yeon is gone after the confession scene.

Liked how Soo Yeon just wants to live a normal life and how he is strict towards his subordinate and frank at the start. There are many behaviours he has that makes him different from the norm and I enjoyed watching that. For example, the reason why he chooses to work at the airport is because he can hide in the many people there and just focus on doing his duties, he doesnt answer his superiors and even questions if he has to do what he is being told to do, he is quick-witted and good at dealing with emergencies or difficult people. Liked how he is portrayed as Yeo Reum’s superhero at the start, saving Yeo Reum twice with his quick moves and metallic arm. It is cool when he does so. This is the reason why I started watching this drama. It is cool how his metallic arm can bend metal poles and lift cars and it is funny how he breaks things easily when he knocks into them. Laughed at the scene where the water dispenser breaks apart some time after his “attempt” to repair it. It was painful to watch when he starts to lose control of his metalllic arm and when the metallic arm starts to attract magnetic objects and he has to pull himself from the objects.

It is fine if Soo Yeon compromises a little here and there due to Yeo Reum’s influences but his whole character seems to change after the confession scene which to me, is a flaw that cant be ignored in this drama. Liked the chemistry and tension between Soo Yeon and Yeo Reum which are just nice in their relationship. It is funny how the dust robot cleaner follows Soo Yeon and even ships Soo Yeon and Yeo Reum once. Liked how Yeo Reum is compassionate. However, was unable to relate to her emotional struggles. Liked the scene where Yeo Reum thanks Soo Yeon for saving her in the past, no matter he remembers her or not.

Liked how this drama delves into the topic of disability. Liked how Soo Yeon’s emotional struggle was portrayed. His fear of drawing people’s attention and how he thinks that people can hurt him just by looking is well-portrayed (cant remember exactly). Liked the scene where Soo Yeon decides to tell Yeo Reum the truth about himself by meeting her on a wheelchair. That scene left a deep impression on me as he falls from his wheelchair down the steps while trying to get his phone (?) and had difficulty getting up, which nicely shows the struggles he faces due to the disability. However, they should have let Yeo Reum be with the disabled Soo Yeon at least for some time to show that Yeo Reum can accept his disability as a part of him.

Another highlight of this drama is the security team couple. Liked the development of relationship and chemistry between them. Liked how Dae Ki manages to find out many things about Young Joo which she tried to hide. Liked how Dae Ki says that he doesnt like puppy faces but likes cat faces. It is such an accurate description and it is so sweet haha. Liked both of the characters and their interactions with Soo Yeon and Yeo Reum.

Liked the friendship between Eun Sub and Yeo Reum. Liked Soo Yeon and Yeo Reum’s superior who stands up for them when needed and assures them that she is there to help them if they make mistakes. Could have had more depth in the relationship between her and the security superior.

Korean Drama Review What’s wrong with Secretary Kim

This review is quite late since I was considering if I should continue watching the last few episodes or not. Decided to write the review regardless before I forget the details or lack the motivation to write it. Just realise that there are a few dramas that I didnt write the review because I didnt manage to watch the last few episodes like Man living in the house, Legend of the blue sea, Cheese in the trap. I watched this drama until ep 14. There seems to be one episode towards the end that contain mostly kissing scenes (if i didnt remember wrongly) and I skipped through it. Doing this by memory.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (2018) 金秘書為何那樣

Genre: Office, Romance, Comedy, Mystery

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 8.5/10 until last few episodes  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Park Seo Joon as Lee Young Joon, Moon Woo Jin as Lee Young Joon (child), Park Min Young as Kim Mi So, Kim Ji Yoo as Kim Mi So (young), Lee Tae Hwan as Lee Sung Yeon, Kang Ki Young as Park Yoo Shik, Hwang Chan Sung as Ko Kwi Nam, Pyo Ye Jin as Kim Ji Ah, Hwang Bo Ra as Bong Se Ra, Kang Hong Suk as Yang Chul

Liked Park Seo Joon’s romantic comedies. Park Seo Joon is good at acting romantic comedies haha. Is he the rom-com prince? Cant remember the title? He is good at being somewhat cold and distant/high up (warming up to the female lead later on) and good at making scenes more romantic. Didnt feel bored quickly when watching She was pretty and this drama, even though a pure romantic comedy usually dont work out well for me. I guess romantic comedies that involve some company context have better plot development and include more plot twists. And another factor that will make me continue watching a rom-com drama or non-fantasy drama is that the characters cannot lose their distinct characteristics as the drama goes haha.

Liked the characters, Young Joon and Mi So a lot. Liked the acting of Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young. It is hilarious how Young Joon is so narcissistic, praising himself, his face and his brain. Liked how Young Joon is smart and confident of himself. It is fun to watch how Young Joon has high standards at work. For example, how he picks out a mistake his friend+subordinate makes and states the precise long string of numbers. His meetings are so intense for people working under him haha. Felt that it is good to have high standards at work but I guess some amount of stress will come along with it if it is me haha. Liked how Mi So is elegant, determined and confident. She is a very good assistant and secretary of Young Joon as she understands him well and can figure out what he needs quickly. She is also a good middleman between Young Joon and his subordinates, relaying his messages in a nicer way. Mi So’s shocked face looks fake and overdone but it nicely portrays the inner awkwardness she feels and a flaw of the seemingly perfect secretary. Liked how both are capable and good at many languages.

Liked the development of relationship and chemistry between Young Joon and Mi So. The bickering and tension is just nice.

Enjoyed watching the perfect date that Young Joon plans for Mi So, including the amusement park rides, the dinner that Young Joon cuts the steak for Mi So, watching fireworks on a ship and ending with Young Joon giving a big soft toy to her. Young Joon manages to sneakily find out what Mi So wants to do for her dates and fulfill all the things she wrote haha! Because of that, she cant even date other people because when she compares the dates with Young Joon’s one, they seem a lot worse.

Felt that the characters, Young Joon and Mi So, are compatible. Liked how Mi So works with Young Joon’s narcissism well and even uses it to add value to a company’s project (ep 4 blackout scene) which shows how Mi So is able to accept this part of Young Joon and is in great rapport with him. Mi So is the only person that is able to tell Young Joon off and Young Joon only cares for Mi So. Both Young Joon and Mi So care a lot about not just doing the best but winning. Mi So helping Young Joon with his tie is romantic haha, even though I feel that it is overstepping the boundaries of a secretary…

Liked how there is nice transition in the relationship building. Liked how Young Joon starts pursuing Mi So once she wants to quit the job to do what she wants to do. Park Seo Joon nicely portrays his shock and fear of losing Mi So for the first time when she tells him that she wants to quit. This part shows a little of Young Joon’s helplessness and vulnerability unlike his usual confident self as he tries all ways to keep Mi So by his side. Another significant part is the fallout between Young Joon and Mi So. Young Joon tries to lower himself and do some of her secretary jobs for Mi So but it ends up backfiring as Mi So actually takes those small things she does with pride. Liked how the struggle was portrayed when Young Joon and Mi So try to adjust how they treat each other so that they are equal in the relationship. It is quite difficult to completely separate their roles at work versus when they are not but I liked how they make the effort. It is funny that after they had an argument, both of them choose to retreat and in their minds, they hope the other would read his/her mind that he/she wants to reconcile haha.

Liked the kiss scene where Mi So helps Young Joon overcome the fear that he feels whenever he closes his eyes. Felt that the scene was well-executed and a deeper emotional meaning was added to the kiss scene. It is funny how Young Joon can still answer people in his sleep haha. Liked how Young Joon and Mi So both portray their emotional struggle regarding a past traumatic event. Felt that Young Joon’s emotional struggle has a higher intensity. Dont think suffering and hardship are usually emphasised in rom-com dramas. Young Joon seems to only think for himself most of the time which makes his gentleman scenes more sweet haha. For example, how he tells Mi So to think for herself (if i didnt remember wrongly) or when he calms Mi So down and offers her a sweet when she sees spiders which she is fearful of or when he makes all his staff go for spa together to let the workaholic Mi So relax. It is nice that he tries to persuade her to stop uncovering the past to protect her from harm. Was touched that he prefers to carry the weight of the traumatic event all by himself (Sorry for spoiler). The comedy scenes are nicely intertwined with the romantic scenes in the drama.

Liked the friendship between Yoo Shik and Young Joon. Liked Kang Ki Young’s acting in this drama. And I just realised that he is actually in many dramas I watched haha. His roles in dramas are so different from one another. The character, Yoo Shik, adds a lot of humour to the drama. Liked how he gives dating advice to Young Joon and also assists him well at work. It is interesting how he is close friends with Young Joon haha. Probably because of his happy-go-lucky personality and how he is smart in his own ways? It is funny how Young Joon coldly suggests giving him more work when he is sad about his ex-wife and goes to Young Joon’s office to share his sorrow. Yoo Shik’s interaction with his secretary is funny. It is ridiculous how his secretary makes mistakes all the time and is clumsy. For example, mixing up the drinks and giving him her diet drink instead of his tonic drink.

The other couples and employees in the company are nice tidbits and are interesting to watch but I guess I didnt like the couples enough. The couples are the man with only one suit and many buttons+new Secretary Kim couple, the chauffeur secretary (?)+loud and cheery woman couple. Liked how the employees have distinct characteristics. It is fun to watch them interacting with each other and they add humour to the drama. I feel that there is nothing wrong with being poor. Even if people say that I did well despite my family background like in Gwi Nam’s case, I will just be proud of myself haha and not be affected negatively like Gwi Nam. Liked how Ji Ah and Se Ra stand up for Mi So when people talk negatively about her. Laughed a lot when watching the meeting at the company retreat (that Young Joon unexpectedly shows up at) as Young Joon asks the staff to use their facial expressions to portray their own vision for the company.

Liked the acting of the child actors/actresses which brings out the background story and the emotional struggle of the two lead characters well. Didnt like Sung Yeon as a character since he appears in the drama haha. Too bad that he is actually quite good-looking. Felt that there is not enough character development and emotional struggle for Sung Yeon. Could have added more depth into the relationship between Young Joon and Sung Yeon to make Sung Yeon more likable. Liked the concept of family in this drama.

I chased this drama due to the mystery in it. However, after the truth is uncovered, the tension and suspense that captivated me to watch is gone and I felt like dropping it. The mystery seems to be holding up the drama and once it is gone, the attractive part of the drama seems to collapse with it. Hope I can finish the last few episodes one day.

Korean Drama Review Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter

I watched episodes 1-around 8 and last few episodes for this drama. Doing this by memory.

Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter (2018) 雞龍仙女傳

starring Moon Chae Won as Sun Ok Nam/ Mama fairy, Go Doo Shim as Sun Ok Nam (old), Yoon Hyun Min as Jung Yi Hyun, Seo Ji Hoon as Kim Geum, Kang Mi Na as Jeom Soon

Enjoyed the fantasy element in the drama! Watched this drama because of the fantasy. For example, how Jeom Soon, the tiger/cat, can transform into a girl, how Mama fairy can sometimes be seen as a young lady instead of a old lady, how Mama fairy can go into dreams and Mama fairy’s flower blooming power. Liked how Jeom Soon’s laptop and mouse can be kept into the scroll when Mama fairy and her daughter, Jeom Soon, travel. How convenient haha! I wish I can do that. The scenery wasnt beautiful enough in this drama though and some parts look a little fake…

Liked how this drama has distinct characters. Yi Hyun is a young and smart professor. It is funny how he doesnt believe in supernatural things and tries to use logic and Science to understand and explain what he experiences after they met Mama fairy. Yoon Hyun Min manages to add humour to the drama with his exaggerated acting and his character being scared easily haha.

Geum is a student currently taking his masters (?) and becomes Yi Hyun’s assistant. Seo Ji Hoon is quite good-looking in this drama. Dont remember seeing him in dramas in the past, even though my sister is already a fan of him before this drama.  May become a fan of him after this drama. Liked how Geum is cute, foolish, kind (to the extent of selfless) and clumsy. It is interesting how he is able to and likes to talk to animals. It is funny when his schoolmates say that he is weird+crazy and he wont get a girlfriend due to his fashion sense and how he only talks to bugs (if i didnt remember wrongly).

Liked how the relationship between Yi Hyun and Geum is portrayed in the drama. They live under one roof, look out for each other and care for each other. A scene that I laughed a lot is when Geum twisted/sprained his neck and cant bend his neck after he was hit by Mama fairy at the waterfall (which is a passageway that connects the mortal and immortal world). Felt sad for Geum when he likes Mama fairy but doesnt try to separate Mama fairy and Yi Hyun and suffers alone.

Liked how Jeom Soon is cute, simple-minded, straightforward and how she is always craving for meat haha. It was fun to watch when she transforms from human to cat and vice versa. It is interesting to watch her writing her erotic novel haha. Liked the mother and daughter relationship between Mama fairy and her. Moon Chae Won acted well with feelings of motherly love. It is funny how Mama fairy is poor at sewing pictures on clothes and Jeom Soon’s expressions when she sees them. Liked Mama fairy as a character and the actresses manage to make both the old her and young her likeable and I dont feel like I am seeing two different people. Liked how she is good at brewing coffee. Had fun watching the people’s expressions after they drink the coffee and some types of coffee have special effects. Liked how she is kind and simple-minded and is not bothered by others’ nasty remarks at all.

Felt that the clumsiness and foolishness of Geum is used well in this drama (not as well-used in Still 17 haha). It is just nice, not overused, and brings out the personality of the character well, making his character more likeable. It is also well utilised to magnify the different feelings Geum feels and helps evoke certain atmosphere. At first, I was rooting for Yi Hyun and Mama fairy since it seems to be more likely for Yi Hyun to be the reincarnated husband. But as the drama goes, I started to doubt it as Geum seems to have more screen time with Mama fairy than Yi Hyun. It is funny when Jeom Soon criticises Geum and praises him at the same time. For example, she says Geum is fun to be with, even though he is not humorous or that he took care of Mama fairy when she was sick but he is surprisingly dense.

The pace for this drama is quite slow as it goes which is why I didnt finish watching the whole of it. Some of the scenes are too cringy and some of the fantasy scenes dont look good enough. Just realise that nowadays I watch more dramas from tvn as compared to other channels haha. Wanted to write a short review of less than 500 words for this drama but it ends up becoming quite long…
