Long Series Kdrama Review Cheongdamdong Scandal

Doing this review by memory.

Cheongdamdong Scandal (2014) 清潭洞丑闻

starring Choi Jung Yoon as Eun Hyun Soo, Kang Sung Min as Bok Soo Ho, Lee Joong Moon as Jang Seo Joon, Seo Eun Chae as Nam Joo Na, Im Sung Uhn as Lee Jae Ni, Kim Jung Woon as Bok Kyung Ho

As the couple Hyun Soo and Soo Ho started out as a loving couple, I expected that they will break up at the end of this long series drama which happens sadly. At first, I didnt quite want them to separate as Soo Ho manages to stay firm against his domineering mother to marry Hyun Soo and their marriage life is romantic but as he slowly loses the trust of Hyun Soo by lying to her later on, I guess the couple cannot last any longer. Too bad because the actor who acted as Soo Ho is quite good-looking haha… While Soo Ho’s mother seems to accept Hyun Soo and treat her like her own daughter, she is actually waiting for their divorce and giving her contraceptive pills disguised as nutrient pills to prevent them from having children. Because Hyun Soo’s mother is a single mother and was a maid (if I am not wrong), her mother-in-law just cannot accept her. She worked very hard to raise her two sons and become rich and wants her sons to marry people who match their family status, especially her elder son, Soo Ho. But of course, she will get her own retribution later for the bad deeds she did.

Liked the couple Seo Joon and Hyun Soo and the development of their relationship as the drama goes. Found how they first meet each other quite funny. If I didnt remember wrongly, Hyun Soo was singing to some child through the phone in the lift (both of them were in) to calm the child down and Seo Joon keeps thinking about it after that and laughing about it. They actually met in the past when they were children. The difference between Seo Joon and Soo Ho that I noticed is that Soo Ho has to have Hyun Soo by his side but Seo Joon does not need to “own” her. Seo Joon has a phobia of water after his mother drowns to save him and Hyun Soo is better able to comfort him than Joo Na who only wants to force him to like her. Eventually, she is even able to help him forget about his phobia seen in an incident that he jumps in the swimming pool when she is bullied by Joo Na and she is pushed in or accidentally slipped into the pool. Also enjoyed the interaction between Hyun Soo and her best friend who may be slow at catching on but provides refuge when she needs it.

Another couple that is memorable is the Jae Ni+Kyung Ho couple. They were arranged to marry by Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother. Kyung Ho’s girlfriend and him were forced to be separated. Because of that, Kyung Ho holds resentment against his mother and is guilt-ridden towards his girlfriend. He makes friend with Hyun Soo and becomes close to her when they become in-laws. Hyun Soo makes him feel better when he feels suffocated in that house. He also admires Soo Ho for being able to go against their mother. Happy that he takes the advice of Hyun Soo and starts to make his arranged marriage filled with love. However, when that happens, sadly something bad happens to Kyung Ho (trying not to give spoiler) and I remembered being sad as it was quite a waste. I think after that, something happened to Jae Ni’s rich family and Kyung Ho+Soo Ho’s mother abandons her and she seeks to take revenge.

Wow, seeing how I can remember so much about this drama even though I watched it quite some time ago, it shows that this drama is quite content rich and have many memorable scenes that captivated me haha or is it because I just happened to have more time at that time to sit in front of the tv and watch haha?

Korean Drama Review RDTK

Decided to write new reviews and edit old reviews at the same time haha… Hopefully I can clear most of my backlog before my school starts! *pant*

Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim (2016-2017) 浪漫醫生金師傅

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Hospital, Melodrama

Enjoyment: 9/10  Pace: 8/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Han Suk Kyu as Kim Sa Bu/ Master Kim, Yoo Yun Suk as Kang Dong Joo, Seo Hyun Jin as Yoon Seo Jung, Yang Se Jong as Do In Bum

Zoom into the characters: After Dong Joo’s father passes away, Dong Joo vows to be a doctor that can defeat the high-ranking doctor, President Do, with skills due to his belief that his father passes away as the high-ranking doctor chose to treat a rich patient instead of his father. However, he ends up doing what the high-rank ing doctor did by choosing to save a patient of high social status to climb the social ladder. Seo Jung, nicknamed “crazy whale”, is a highly skilled doctor at the emergency department who is very calm no matter the situation. Although she has a boyfriend already, she is wavered by Dong Joo and goes missing due to guilt after her boyfriend died in a car accident she was also in. Two of them meet again at Doldam Hospital after different setbacks. Master Kim was a former well-known doctor at the hospital both of them once worked at. After he failed to save his student and was rejected by the medical industry, he now holds on to romantic ideals about being a doctor. Towards the new recruits, he is critical and harsh but provides good guidance to them as the drama goes. Do In Bum is President Do’s son. Although he seems to have it all with his rich father and status, he is more recognised as President Do’s son than himself. He is skilled but sometimes lies to gain experience in operations he has not been involved previously.

Saw this drama’s previews on Channel U which caused me to remember how I dropped it after the first episode one day. I watched it out of curiosity due to reading somewhere that the drama has high rating since the actor that acts as Master Kim is in it. However, after I watched the first episode I found it too cheesy with Dong Joo’s sudden confession and their sudden kiss so I dropped it. Since my sister becomes curious about this drama too, we decided to try it together and we ended up finishing most of it before the first episode is screened on Channel U.

It is a meaningful drama with touching moments and it was fun to watch the many different types of cases at Doldam hospital. Happy that there are not many gross scenes and the surgery processes or clinical treatments are watchable haha (unlike in Hospital Ship which I finished watching 3/4). It is funny whenever it is Friday as there will be a sudden influx of patients which the doctors will have a hard time handling haha.

The cases that are most memorable to me are the multi-collision car accidents at the bend of the road and the lorry/truck hitting a group of cyclists that survived cancer:

Because of 2 young people who drink-drive happily (their drink-driving scene is hilarious) when the road is slippery due to snow, it causes many cars to collide after them as they are not able to see ahead at the bend of the road. There are several touching moments for that incident, especially when one of the casualties is the young daughter of a man trying to find fault with Master Kim under President Do’s orders. Master Kim saves her despite how her father does not allow the ban to be lifted even for his daughter. Liked how Master Kim is consistent in how he treats each patient as equal, and his conviction that in all circumstances, he should try his best to save the patients, no matter the patient is a rapist, the daughter of someone trying to ban him from medical practice, a rich chairman or a AIDS/HIV (?) patient.

Due to illness (?) of a lorry driver, he dozed off while driving and without knowing knocked into cyclists in a single file cycling on the road one by one. The cyclist who saw the lorry should have shouted for the others to avoid it instead of just blowing on the whistle. It is such a waste that they just survived the sufferings of cancer and end up in a fatal accident. This case provides insight to Dong Joo as a doctor too. Dong Joo ends up in a panic and almost wants to give up during the operation as the patient that he could not cure before transferring there had liver cancer too.

Enjoyed watching the interaction between the characters and the development of relationships in Doldam Hospital as more and more new members join them, including those from the big hospital that are there to cause troubles haha. Impressed by Master Kim’s surgical skills, and the ability of the hospital staff to make good use of outdated and poor medical equipment and devices at the start of the drama.

Liked the chemistry between Seo Jung and Dong Joo which is sustained from the start to the end of the drama. Felt that Seo Jung’s mental issues could have been better resolved, especially by including Dong Joo in the recovery process. Enjoyed watching Dong Joo’s growth and struggle as he detaches himself from hospital politics and becomes a true and more skilled doctor. It was heartfelt when he ignores his mother’s phone calls at a difficult time but at one of the times he answered, he is overwhelmed by emotions, and just cries into the phone and his mother just listens.  On a side note, my mother almost dropped this drama when Dong Joo is not at the centre of attention haha…

It is interesting how there is a voiceover mostly by Dong Joo which talks about reality or opinions of matters or the world throughout the drama. Enjoyed how the drama reflects on the purpose of being a doctor: to save patients or to earn more money and climb up the social ladder, as well as issues doctors face on a daily basis. In Doldam Hospital, it is possible to just save patients without caring too much about politics in the hospital. Actually, will the doctors feel that their job is fulfilling just saving patients 24h? Don’t doctors want a rest sometimes or a chance to supervise others in the job? Also felt that there is such great responsibility in this occupation and it becomes more of a duty than a job. On the other hand, it is interesting that the doctors feel more fulfilling when they have patients coming in which gives them a chance to carry out their job and exhibit their skills.

Why you should watch: It is a meaningful drama and I loved the acting of the cast, especially the Doldam Hospital team (Master Kim, Director Yoo, Manager Jang, Nurse Oh, Nurse Park, Anesthetist Nam, later on: Dr Dong Joo, Dr Seo Jung) each person with distinct and likeable personality and characteristics, and the 3 doctors (Dr Song, Dr In Bum, Dr Seo Jung’s friend) that end up being transferred there too.

China Drama Review 不一样的美男子1

This post is long overdued haha. Found this drama at a period of time when there was not much kdrama to watch. It is quite a gem and an awesome sci-fiction romantic comedy! Doing this based on memory.

Buyiyangdemeinanzi (2014)

starring Zhang Han as Gao Yuan Shu 高远树, Emma Wu as Tong Yu Chen 童雨晨, Lu Chen as Li Yi 李伊, Ji Ya Wen as Yan Chao Chen 燕超尘, Zhang Yun Long as An Yi Fei 安逸飞, Fang Yi Lun as Ye Jiang Fan 叶江帆, Fan Shi Qi as He Xiao Qian 何小歉, Yi Yi Zi (易易紫) as Zhao Xiao Qi 赵小琪 (Xiao Qian’s manager)

For Season 1, Yuan Shu was proposing to his girlfriend, Yu Chen, lavishly when a boat crashed into them and caused a horrific accident. Something pierced into Yuan Shu’s heart, Yi Fei injured his eyes, and Xiao Qian is badly burnt. All 3 of them get a transplant each: heart, eye, skin from a scientist (same accident) that uses his own body to experiment on a drug (?) that produces super power but also negative side effects. The 3 good friends are thus gifted with three different super powers that change their life. Gao Yuan Shu (Zhang Han) can control electromagnetism, An Yi Fei (Zhang Yun Long) can predict the future, and He Xiao Qian (Fan Shi Qi) can read other people’s thoughts.

The fantasy is what attracted me to watch this drama though the title doesnt haha…The title “Not the same handsome guy” sounds tooo childish and too direct(?) haha? The funny part is that most of the people in the drama somehow are exposed to the virus (?) and have different types of super power as the drama progresses. Liked the development of relationship between the 3 friends. From the start, they often tease each other and seem like they will never grow up haha. As it goes, they are good support for each other and they help each other in times of need.

As it goes, I especially liked Yi Fei as a character so does my sister who likes the character, Yi Fei, in both seasons. (I end up becoming a fan of that actor even though he acts as different characters in both seasons.) Although Yi Fei likes Yu Chen too, he gives up his love since Yu Chen and Yuan Shu are already a pair. He seems optimistic most of the time but I liked how there is complexity in his character, his strong loyalty, his selflessness, his vulnerability sometimes helplessness, with a lingering feeling of light sadness his character expresses. It was a bit slow pace when Yuan Shu chooses a few times to give up on love when he knows that he may die. Despite how I still ship him with Yu Chen, his character just does not shine through the drama like Yi Fei’s haha. It is cool when Yuan Shu can make things fly around with his new ability. It is romantic whenever Yuan Shu and Yu Chen are at sea or near the sea since Yuan Shu can make waves move and control the “lights of the sea”. Yi Fei’s ability to draw/paint out the future so vividly is also cool but the sad thing is he does not have the ability to change it. This ability seems like the least useful to me. I dont think I ever want to know my future, especially one that I cant change.

Xiao Qian’s ability to hear people’s thoughts is not as fascinating to me after I watched kdrama I hear your voice. Yet, it is interesting that his ability actually makes his girlfriend-to-be friend+manager suspicious of him, and instead of making their relationship closer, it actually draws more distance between them since Xiao Qian with his newfound ability gets closer to fame. It is conflicting that she wants him to be innocent and mature at the same time. Special mentions to the actress who acted as Li Yi as I liked how her character is portrayed.

Enjoyed watching how Jiang Fan is a genius at IT, example hacking. Liked the interaction between Jiang Fan and Yi Fei. Each of the people who is exposed to the virus (?) has a negative side effect while they have a special ability. (Looks like any good thing comes with a sacrifice? It is unique how this drama portrays super power as something that comes with a price.) Yi Fei’s one is that he will suddenly fall into deep sleep anytime and anywhere, and I am impressed that Jiang Fan fetches him to his house and takes such good care of him. Always wanted to watch a drama that concentrates on this kind of sleeping disorder/illness haha (though this one does not focus on it enough)! I think they are just meant to be for each other? No matter it is in season 1 or 2, both of them only have each other and look out for each other at all times. But it is sad they dont have a girl each haha…

Oh no, I just realised after writing this review that there are no english subtitles for this drama. Luckily I didnt write the review early this year. If not, you all may have a longer wait if you want to watch it haha. Now at ondramanice only have raw version for 10 episodes? You can watch it at youtube for full version but i dont think there are english subtitles. I didnt even realise it since I know Chinese. Since this is the case, I will postpone the review for Bu Yi Yang De Mei Nan ZI Season 2 to another time haha…

hello

Since my review writing ability has improved yay and I can write a lot more now haha, I have decided to add on to reviews I am not satisfied with in the pages (eg Korean Dramas, Singapore Dramas and Taiwanese Dramas) rather than create new posts for now. Hopefully I can still remember the dramas that I have watched and am only writing the reviews later…

I am currently watching many dramas with my sister that havent finished screening. Dont know why but suddenly have so many dramas to watch. Must be the pure crime season slowly moving off…

Doubtful victory is a thriller and luckily, it has not finished screening if not I think my sister will feel like watching everything in one go. Even I myself is dashing through it and sometimes watching it when there are no subtitles. It is crime related but the ending of each episode and Yoon Kyun-sang’s acting just makes one want for more. Two cops is also crime related but the fantasy element of a con-artist’s soul being able to possess a righteous detective’s body is funny and captivating. I also liked the acting of Jo Jung-suk. Not sure if we are going to continue to watch Nothing to lose as the plot is not interesting enough even though the perspective of the drama from the point of view of a judge rather than lawyer or prosecutor is refreshing. I am not a robot is interesting and I am watching it because of Yoo Seung Ho. For sg dramas, I am watching My friends from afar and seeing if I missed out any good ones.

Just for collation

Finished but no review done

Korean Web Drama Last Minute Romance

Last Minute Romance (2017)

Cast: Han Seung Yeon as Baek Se, Lee Seo Won as Yoon Dong Joon / Ji Sul Woo(top star)

Episodes: 10

Recommendation: 8.5/10

My Review: This is the first time I have a dilemma on the recommendation points. I did not know whether I should give 8 points or 9 points so I decided to put 8.5 points. It is actually quite a normal plot. It was obvious that they will fall in love, it was obvious that the top star was definitely the complete opposite of Dong Joon and it was obvious and saddening that Baek Se will die regardless. However, I felt that the drama was good as it gave me different types of feeling. For example, I was sad because I knew Baek Se was going to die. It brought me laughter too because Dong Joon acting as the top star and Baek Se acting as the other lead was so cringy and funny. It feels sad that they could not end up together but it was quite a sweet love story to me.

Korean Drama Review IB

Introverted boss (2017) 內向的老闆

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Family, Introversion

Enjoyment: 10/10  Pace: 9/10  No. of times I watched it: 1

starring Yun Woo Jin as Eun Hwan Ki, Park Hye Soo as Chae Ro Woon, Yoon Park as Kang Woo Il and Gong Seung Yun as Eun Yi Soo

Zoom into characters: Hwan Ki is a mysterious introvert who works at the background at his father’s public relations company Brain as a Co-CEO with his best friend, Woo Il, who is always in public eye. Ro Woon has a cheery personality. She once worked in musicals but after her sister’s suicide, she becomes less outspoken at home, and starts to work at the public relation company to dig out the truth behind her sister’s death and to take revenge on the CEO that is rumoured to cause her sister’s death. Woo Il feels guilty for Ro Won’s sister’s death and is afraid that people will find out about it, wanting Hwan Ki to hide the truth. Yi Soo, Hwan Ki’s sister, wants to hold on to Woo Il by all means. Beneath her happy and innocent exterior, she is actually insecure, hurt, and ruthless.

Enjoyed how Yun Woo Jin portrays his character and the character’s emotional struggle! It was a bit exaggerating at the start, somehow his introversion is portrayed more as a mental disorder. As the drama goes, the character is intriguing and quite relatable to me. The shyness, thinking too much and being afraid to interact with people and express opinions: for example the scene where he is unable to tell the barber what hairstyle he wants to cut when he was young, are things I have experienced before or may still experience. It is funny whenever he has long self-dialogues and complicate things for himself before finally reaching a justifiable conclusion in his mind. Sometimes, when that happens, he misses the opportunity to speak haha. It is hilarious when he often dashes away in times of “crises”. I laughed the hardest at the scene about Ro Woon’s ugly face in the phone (watch it to find out). My sister finds his character the cutest of dramas she has seen haha.

Liked how his penthouse office is portrayed as dark and mysterious at the start: Hwan Ki in a black hoody, sharpening his pencils by using a knife in the dark, his whole cupboard filled with many different types of knifes haha when people open it. How convenient that Hwan Ki mostly lives at his penthouse office.

Enjoyed watching how the character, Hwan Ki, grows as he is forced by his father to lead a team of people with distinct characteristics: a mother whose work is affected by her children, a rich family’s son, a person overly critical about others’ work but not producing enough results, a quiet and sensitive person who is lacking in many areas. Most ought to be fired due to their lack of ability so they are sent there. Ro Woon is sent there by Woo Il who feels that her cheery personality can change Hwan Ki. At first, he cant even talk to his team properly or give presentations but slowly manages to join them in meeting, trips and gatherings. Liked how he eventually gains the respect of all his team members and helps them maximise their potential with his keen observation and listening ear. He also manages to gain the trust of his clients with his firm and quiet ways.

Liked how the relationship between Hwan Ki and Ro Woon develops as Hwan Ki opens up more and more to Ro Woon. I read some negative comments about Ro Woon as a character but to me, it was fun to watch her bubbly but reflective nature and her understanding towards Hwan Ki which helps him step out of his comfort zone and leads him to improvement. Impressed by Hwan Ki’s almost-to-be girlfriend who separated with Hwan Ki due to a misunderstanding. She is spontaneous and does not mind a fair competition with Ro Woon or giving up on Hwan Ki even though she knew Hwan Ki earlier and it is mainly Hwan Ki’s fault that they didnt end up together. How I wish most supporting characters are like that!

Woo Il and Yi soo’s relationship is small titbit to the drama and I am happy that they have resolved their relationship and make it a healthy one. Both of them have their strengths and weaknesses and it is nice watching how they play major roles in Hwan Ki’s life. Hwan Ki tries to protect them but sometimes creates more mess haha. From this, I learnt that even as observant introverts, we should not assume that we know everything and we should ask what others think before jumping to conclusion. Liked how Hwan Ki is close to his younger sister, Yi Soo, their sweet interaction and how he cooks delicious meals for her at his office hmmm. Wasnt totally convinced with Ro Woon’s sister’s suicide story but at the moment I cant think of something better that can replace it as Ro Woon’s sister’s story is a major piece in the plot development. :\

Why you should watch: Enjoyed watching this drama a lot! Didnt expect much from it at first due to negative comments about it and how it stopped screening for some time for changes to be made. Became a fan of Yun Woo Jin after this drama. Liked how they dedicated a drama to amplify characteristics of introverts who are often misunderstood in daily life. The characters are well portrayed and the pace is just nice, at least for 5/6 of it.

Between Love and Friendship (2017)

Cast: Baek Soo-hee, Jaeho, Jo Hye-Won

Episodes: 8

Recommendation: 7/10

My review: I was really bored yesterday as I did not have a show to watch and I came across this web drama which is about two friends who are more than just friends but not lovers. What I really like about this drama is the sweet and short plot despite it being a very plain story plot of friends wanting to be lovers but do not know how to and how they got together in the end.

KBS drama special episodes review

Hi everyone haha!

Due to a lack of dramas that can entertain me a week, I tried watching kbs drama specials with my sister but it didnt turn out too well haha… Every week, I wait for While you were sleeping to be screened. But I remember that when I chased I hear your voice, the anticipation feeling was higher. Tried Borg Mum but after a certain episode when Go Bong becomes extremely worried that he has fallen in love with a robot and escapes from the problem, it didnt attract me anymore. Black is too crime related and involves too much details, though its creepiness and grim are attractive. Even if I do continue, it will be a quick browse through. Hospital Ship, to my sister, is too mature for her liking. I am still continuing it myself mainly to see Kang Min Hyuk haha and the romance between the lead couple, even though I am not entertained enough by the drama.

Kbs drama special episodes I watched in one night

What is the ghost up to? (2015)

Liked Lee Joon’s acting since seeing him in Gap Dong and Vampire Detective though I didnt finish both as they are crime related dramas that didnt quite suit my taste. In this one episode, his character is quite funny with his hilarious angry outbursts or his crazy screaming when he sees the ghost haha. His girlfriend broke up with him and her reason/criticism haunts him. Although he does well academically, he seems crippled by her remarks and cannot get a job or move on well in life…until… one day, she returns and wants him to find her boyfriend. He is angry but pities her and decides to help her which leads to a surprise revelation. Shall not give too much spoiler haha. Towards the end, I actually felt tears flowing out of my eyes even though I skipped through certain parts in between towards the end. At the first time I watched, I was hit hard due to the words she wrote in her notes and the second time I watched with my sister that night, it was at the final “pop goes the weasel” part.

You can watch it in Youtube.

Next, I decided to watch something that looks nice on the cover.

If we were a season (KBS Drama special 2017 Episode 1)

Like the title haha! The development of the relationship of the lead characters is well portrayed from young to their high school days and nights, showing how they play or pass messages through a window between their houses from young to how they naturally watch out for each other in school. The scenery and weather fit nicely with the plot and beautifies the story. It is a typical love triangle story but I liked the lead couple’s acting and chemistry. Liked Jang Dong-Yoon here more than in School 2017. Jin Young’s character has no place in between them haha. My sister is a fan of Jin Young but she says he looks out of place as he doesnt even look like a high schooler, like the rest of them haha. She feels that when he jokes with Chae Soo Bin’s character, it felt cold instead of cheesy. I was quite baffled by the family background story towards the end. When I reached the ending, I felt like shouting at the screen “No…Why?!” :/

Things seem to be going downhill.

Finally, my last episode of the night

Waltzing Alone (KBS Drama special 2017 Episode 4)

When I looked at the title, I should have been warned. But unfortunately, when I browsed through YouTube quickly, none of the pictures or plots of other drama special episodes attracted me so I thought I should give it a try. Maybe it will turn out to be a beautiful heartwarming story?

The story especially at the start is beautiful but unfortunately it wasnt heartwarming but heartbreaking. The lingering regrets and heartbreaks of the episode, especially when they had their final breakdown, was hard to get rid of haha. And when I am writing this, the feeling is coming back aaahhhh. Loved the dancing of waltz (something I want to learn one day haha) as the theme throughout the episode, especially at the start where the scenes showed how the lead couple danced through life together, depicted through the different attires and locations as they dance and dance and dance. (Yeo Hoi-Hyeon looks more and more good looking as the episode goes haha.) It is romantic and whenever they dance or are in the waltz footwork they seem blissful, shielded from the harsh reality of the world.

However, the reality of the competitive corporate life and the pressure to get a permanent job soon catch up with both of them as they are rejected by one company after another. When they had to compete for the same job position, it turns out to be a cruel battle which could have been resolved if they decide to have a fair competition. 😦

Lesson learnt:  Not going to have too much kbs drama special in one dose since it is bound to affect my mood. Maybe once a month haha? Wonder if all of them end up sad? Haha, but I think I will stay away from them for a while…  If you are looking for a so-called movie or want to borrow something’s help to cry and release stress or just want to feel “stabbed” or give yourself a reason to be sad, maybe you can try them.
