Long Series Korean Dramas

For long series, especially family dramas, I do not really watch the whole drama but just “slot in” at interesting and important parts when my parents are watching or skip through on my own if it is interesting.

Sweet Home, Sweet Honey (2015-2016) 我們家蜜罈子

Episodes: 129

starring Song Ji Eun as Oh Bom, Lee Jae Joon as Kang Ma Roo, Hong Dong Young as Ma Roo (child), Seo Yi Ahn as Choi Ah Ran, Kim Min Soo as Ahn Tae Ho, Choi Myung Gil as Bae Gook Hee, Lee Young Ha as Choi Jung Ki, Kim Yoo Suk as Ahn Gil Soo

This drama is based on the wine industry. Young Oh Bom who saw her mother’s right hand man betraying her mother is “purposely” abandoned so that she can never let her mother know. She is thus raised at a poor family initially filled with love but later is burdened with her father’s debt which her mother made her carry after her father’s sudden death. If I didnt remember wrongly, she has a talent in knowing when the wine is fermented just by smell (?) and differentiating the types of wine by smell.

Felt that there are many annoying characters in this drama, more than usual. Only liked the leads in the drama. Most of the characters only care about themselves and cause sufferings to other characters. The leads live quite a tough life each: Bom having to work many part-time jobs to pay off the debts of her adoptive family, and Ma Roo who lost his parents has to support himself when staying with his stepfather. Liked their chemistry, and how they support each other. Lee Jae Joon is quite good-looking haha. I almost thought that Tae Ho is the main lead since Bom’s family and his family will eventually be enemies and this type of scenario happens often especially in long series drama. Felt that Ma Roo is quite immature at first when he sticks to Bom even working at where she works. My sister felt that the acting of the young people in this drama felt fake many times. Didnt watch enough of the drama to see it.

Save the Family (2015) 守護家族

Episodes: 123

starring Jae Hee as Jung Woo Jin, Kang Byul as Lee Hae Soo

Found this drama quite a drag, more draggy due to it being like a typical family drama and there is not much plot twists or substance in the plot. Liked Jae Hee as an actor since Sassy girl Chun Hyang but somehow it is a waste that I dont see him often in lead roles in shorter drama series haha. Liked the development of relationship between Woo Jin and Hae Soo. Both of them just want happiness for the other no matter they are together or not. Enjoyed watching Hae Soo’s interaction with the bunch of children she takes care of and raise. If I am not wrong, they are not even her blood-related siblings. Didnt like Woo Jin’s mother is money-minded which brings much unhappiness to her son when she tries to match-make Woo Jin and a rich family’s daughter. Felt Woo Jin can be more sure of what he wants and be more clear when ending the relationship with the rich family’s daughter.

Didnt like how Woo Jin’s father keeps lending money to his brother who is a businessman every time he gets hold of some money (retirement benefit, becoming a singer). I wonder if that is the cause of Woo Jin’s mother being money-minded since she is so sick of leading a poor life? Why cant he think of his family situation before he lends money to his brother? Perhaps this is also considered a form of selflessness? Dont think I will be able to do that time and again just because my sibling ask for money haha? It is a waste that Hae Soo’s mother chose to chase after the woman who stole their money for so many years instead of trying to protect her family, and making Hae Soo suffer as a result. However, if her family, especially her husband, believed in her more and did not blame her for stealing the money, would that happen? Happy that there is a good ending for the rich family’s son, the rich family’s daughter’s stepbrother, who just wants a happy family: her stepsister and mother to reconcile and stop fighting over the company.

Beautiful you (2015) 美麗的你

Episodes: 122

starring Lee So Yeon as Cha Seo Kyung, Kang Eun Tak as Ha Jin Hyung, Seo Do Young as Kim Seong Joon

Touched by how much Jin Hyung does for Seo Kyung, a single mum, especially how he endangers his life a few times to save her young daughter: shielding her daughter from falling heavy boxes, getting into a car accident to save her daughter. The 2nd lead always somehow lets his chance slip by as he either didnt notice the accident or left the scene too early haha. This drama is quite slow pace as they keep getting together and separating (longer time) but the moments when they are together are precious haha. It is nice how the drama portrays how love should not be calculative and how big and encompassing love can be. Became a fan of Kang Eun Tak after this.

The Return of Hwang Geum Bok (2015) 歸來的黃金福

Rosy lovers (2014) 蔷薇色的恋人们

Episodes: 52

starring Lee Jang Woo as Park Cha Dol, Han Sun Hwa as Baek Jang Mi

Story about a single father bringing up his child with much difficulty and meets with his lover, who abandoned them, once again. If i didnt remember wrongly, there were some misunderstandings between them due to Jang Mi’s father trying to seperate them without them knowing. The child is really cute and helps to match-make and reunite the couple. Liked Lee Jang Woo’s acting and became his fan after this drama. Liked how he portrayed the struggle of the single father, working hard to overcome lots of obstacles to provide for his daughter. Enjoyed watching their interaction and how he dotes on his daughter.

What happens to my family? (2014) 家人之间为何这样

Episodes: 53

starring Yoo Dong Geun as Cha Bong Soon, Kim Hyun Joo as Cha Kang Shim, Yoon Park as Cha Gang Jae, Park Hyung Shik as Cha Dal Bong, Nam Ji Hyun as Kang Seo Wool, Seo Kang Joon as Yoon Eun Ho

Cha Bong Soon’s children are far from being filial, one who is defeated by a relationship setback and promises not to marry, one who is an arrogant doctor shameful of his poor family, and one who often uses his fists and has not find a purpose in life. When Bong Soon realises he has terminal illness, he decides to make a secret plan to help them change.

This drama is quite content rich and I dont feel as frustrated when watching this as compared to other long series dramas haha. Felt that it was funny when the children try to deceive the father that they dont know about his terminal illness towards the end. They panic so much, especially Dal Bong, and it is so obvious that they know about it haha.

Jang Bo Ri is here (2014) 张宝利来了!

Episodes: 52

starring Oh Yeon Seo as Jang Bo Ri, Yoo Eun Mi as Jang Bo Ri (child), Kim Ji Hoon as Lee Jae Hwa, Jung Yoon Suk as Lee Jae Hwa (child), Oh Chang Suk as Lee Jae Hee, Jo Hyun Do as Lee Jae Hee (child), Lee Yoo Ri as Yun Min Jung, Shin Soo Yun as Yun Min Jung (child)

This drama is about two families, two women, two mothers who have to deal with very unexpected surprise when their daughters’ identities changed overnight. Jang Bo Ri (Oh Yeon Seo) who grew up with her poor family suddenly becomes wealthy overnight after she discovers that she’s a daughter of a wealthy family. In contrary, Yun Min Jung (Lee Yoo Ri) suddenly has to adapt herself from living in luxury to her poor family.

Zoom into characters: Due to Eun Bi’s mother’s evil-doings, Eun Bi was knocked down by a truck operated by Min Jung’s mother. Hence, she lost her memory and becomes Min Jung’s sister, Bo Ri. Min Jung who is good at lying and greedy seeks all ways to become an adoptive daughter of the wealthy family which makes hanbok. She even copies Eun Bi’s drawing to participate in a competition which was set to find Eun Bi and hides Bo Ri’s real  identity at all cost. She also abandons her own child and breakup with her boyfriend so as to marry into a richer family when her boyfriend’s father’s company is going through difficulty. I find Min Jung’s mother terrible as well. She tries her best to help Min Jung cover up her lies but works Bo Ri to the maximum. She makes use of Bo Ri’s kind heart to make Min Jung’s child Bo Ri’s so as to keep her bloodline nearby. I feel slightly sorry for her as her daughter abandoned her and pretends to be an orphan yet she cannot help but look out for her daughter. As Bo Ri learns to make hanbok, she gets nearer and nearer to the bottom of the mystery of her past.

King’s family / Wang’s family (2013) 王氏家族

Episodes: 50

Enjoyment: 8/10

Did not expect it to be that engaging even though I do not watch every episode. I like the second daughter’s part of the drama the most and I support the couple the most. Her husband makes the most significant change, from poor to rich to even poorer. Although he has a lawyer degree, he does not put it to good use and the family income is mostly from his wife. They finally managed to buy a house due to his wife’s effort. Although her husband is always looked down by her family, he always stands up for his wife. They are still a loving couple (with cute children) until her husband finally gets a job and he has an extra-marital affair, blinded by money. Finally, he gets chased out and becomes a beggar after being discovered for stealing things from the rich lady’s house to save his wife. In the end, he becomes a househusband and it is his turn to look out in case his wife has an extra-marital affair. I loved the romance between the couple the most. I admire the second daughter. She is able to achieve many things from scratch with her own hard work. I really dislike how their mother treats the second daughter. She does the most to help their family anytime but their mother only treats her badly, even causing her miscarriage of her 3rd child.

Why you should watch: This drama never fails to tug at my heart with the touching scenes such as when second daughter’s husband stands up for her against her family/ when the third daughter and her boyfriend experience longing/ when the first daughter’s husband company went bankrupt. Although it is a long series drama, its pace is just right and it does not beat about the bush.

100 Year Legacy (2013) 百年的遺產

Episodes: 50

starring Lee Jung Jin as Lee Se Yoon, Eugene as Min Chae Won, Choi Won Young as as Kim Chul Goo, Yoon Ah Jung as Kim Joo Ri

My daughter, flower (2011) 我的女儿是花儿

Episodes: 131

Liked the chemistry between the lead couple acted by Choi Jin Hyuk and Jin Se Yun! Watched this a long time ago. The most memorable thing I remember from this drama, besides how much the lead couple bickers, is Choi Jin Hyuk’s character’s younger brother. Liked the acting of Choi Jin Hyuk’s character’s younger brother who becomes mentally challenged after an accident. Towards the end, he actually recovers and regains his memory. But I am not too sure if this drama can be found online.

Smile, Dong Hae (2010) 笑吧, 东海

Episodes: 159

starring as Ji Chang Wook as Dong Hae / Karl Laker, Do Ji Won as Anna Laker (Dong Hae’s mother)

Liked Ji Chang Wook’s character in this drama, his perseverance, and his interaction with his mentally challenged mother.

Giant (2010) 巨人

Episodes: 60

starring Lee Bum Soo as Lee Kang Mo, Yeo Jin Goo as Kang Mo (teen), Park Jin Hee as Hwang Jung Yeon, Nam Ji Hyun as Jung Yeon (teen), Park Sang Min as Lee Sung Mo, Kim Soo Hyun as Sung Mo (teen), Joo Sang Wook as Jo Min Woo, Hwang Jung Eum as Lee Mi Joo, Park Ha Young as Mi Joo (child)

This drama tells the story of three siblings who grew up in the 1970’s. Lee Kang Mo, his older brother Sung Mo and younger sister Mi Joo were separated at a young age when their father was killed in a smuggling scheme and their mother also died subsequently. When they are able to reunite years later, they had all reached adulthood and are determined to exact revenge upon the people responsible for their misery.

Zoom into characters: The happiness of the family is destroyed when their father without even knowing what is going on is being shot by an evil official. His best friend told him to escape but to no avail. As a witness to his father’s murder, Sung Mo stricken with terror and hatred escapes with the rest of the family. However, he is not able to do so when he jumps down the train when the enemy is hot on their heel. After that, he works in the military running errands and doing laundry. He eventually becomes the spy for the enemy and awaits the chance to exact revenge. Kang Joo on the other hand is not so fortunate (in a way). After their mother’s death, they lose their luggage and struggle to survive each day. He brings along his younger sister and baby brother and has to work hard to feed both of them. When they are waiting for Sung Mo to reunite, Kang Mo even loses his younger sister. When Sung Mo finally arrives at the location, Kang Mo is too busy searching for Mi Joo that they missed each other. Kang Mo also has to send off the baby brother to the orphanage helplessly.

Happiness in the wind/A Good Day For The Wind To Blow (2010) 风吹好日子

Episodes: 173

starring Kim So Eun as Kwon Oh Bok, Jin Yi Han as Jang Dae Han, Lee Hyun Jin as Jang Min Guk, Seo Hyo Rim as Jang Man Se

Liked how the 3 children’s names add up to Long Live Republic of Korea (Dae Han大韩 Min Guk 明国 Man Se 万岁) haha! From what I remember, this drama mostly revolves around one family with 3 children: Dae Han is a single father, Min Guk dreams to become an inventor, and Man Se wants to be a model and likes a guy who is from a rich family. Dae Han and Oh Bok started out not on good terms and treat each other as enemies but after a while fall for each other. The families at first oppose to Dae Han marrying Oh Bok as she is too young and still has to take care of Dae Han’s son but end up agreeing. Dae Han’s son is cute haha. May become a fan of Jin Yi Han after this drama. Liked Lee Hyun Jin and Kim So Eun’s acting.

Min Guk is not doing well in terms of career and relationships but there is a turn of events, and he manages to put his talent to use, and I think he ends up with his best friend-turned-girlfriend? Min Guk thought that he is the adopted son as he is always being treated poorly by his mother but ends up Dae Han is the one haha. Usually people treat children who are not theirs better. If I am not wrong, Man Se’s rich in-law family actually suddenly becomes poor in between and she still goes through thick and thin with them which makes her mother-in-law accept her and feel sorry for treating her badly. At first, I thought Man Se is just after the money but there seems to be more in her character.

Pure Pumpkin Flower (2010) 南瓜花的纯情

Episodes: 125

Sneaked peek into it when my mother was watching. What I remembered most clearly about it is that it is about food and cooking. Liked how there are many challenges to overcome for the lead girl character as she takes pride in food she makes. Liked how the lead guy character is supportive of her and her decisions, and does not mind lowering his status and act like a poor guy even though he is the son of a rich family with big corporation.

East of Eden (2008) 伊甸園之東

Episodes: 56

starring Song Seung Hun as Lee Dong Chul, Yun Jung Hoon as Lee Dong Wook, Lee Yeon Hee as Gook Young Ran / Grace,  Park Hae Jin as Shin Myung Hun and Han Ji Hye as Kim Ji Hyun.

The drama will be about two men whose fates are crossed from the very first day that they were born. Both men were born in the same hospital. When he was a teenager, Lee Dong Chul witnessed the death of his father. From then on he promised to seek revenge on the man who caused his father’s death, Shin Tae Hwan. But unbeknownst to everybody is the fact that Dong Chul’s younger brother, Dong Wook, was switched at birth with Tae Hwan’s son, Myung Hun. Dong Wook grows up to become a prosecutor and vows to help his brother seek revenge. But what happens when they find out that they’re not brothers? What will Dong Chul do when he finds out that his real brother was raised by Shin Tae Hwan and that the brother that was beside him all these years is the son of his enemy?

Likeable or not (2007) 爱也好,恨也好

Episodes: 172

starring Han Ji Hye as Na Dan Poong and Kim Ji Suk as Kang Baek Ho. This drama is a story about love, family, and the realism of people’s dreams. Definitely worth the time if you are patient haha! If I am not wrong, it is quite draggy when I watch episode by episode so I watch here and there. Liked Kim Ji Suk’s character a lot. May become a fan of him because of this drama. The most memorable scene is the scene where the lead couple are stuck in the freezer warehouse which I still remember until now (2017). Baek Ho is actually the son of the rich family but his mother keeps this secret hidden. Baek Ho’s mother ends up marrying the rich man (Baek Ho’s father) and brings Baek Ho along, and Baek Ho, being clueless, thought his father is another man and even gives offering to the dead person in the rich family house much to the family members’ unhappiness. Dan Poong is at first expected to marry a doctor (?) but after Baek Ho joins the company and works with her, she starts to fall for him.
